I was cleaning up my shop ... cutting up bits too big for my wood stove... Evidently ran past the pusher on my angle gilhooley... hit the thumb pretty square...  never touched the nail...

The mess I'm (trying) to work in.

I was making a 3 string for a VERY small lady, so I tried to make a very low profile neck for her tiny hands. All was going well until I tested the rigidity and discovered I had made a pretty good…Continue

So I got some new forstner bits (Norther Tool and Equipment has a great set for $23) and decided to drill some sound holes in my next set of boxes. Cut the lids off and cut the holes in one. Nice job. Put the next lid under the first one and used the first lid holes as a template. Great. Punched a few guide holes for centering. Then I realized the second lid was 180 degrees rotated from the first and the holes were on the wrong end. Fortunately, these boxes have the same art on the inside. DOH!

My bonehead move of the weekend - I built a fret filing jig and it works really well. so well, I filed off the "binding" on one side of the neck. PS - Plug for CB Gitty, who sells a proper jig, which I didn't know until today (I need to read more). First pic - "the jig" Second pic - files aren't just for metal (Doooh!).

I also cut the angle on the peghead but decided it would be ok to not flip that piece around and scarf it. Didn't change anything at all from the back side so ..I made a peice and screwed it above the nut to give me string tension. Live and learn .

See that lone sound hole on the top side: ) That's where my volume knob started . Till I started to play it it never dawned on me for some reason that's right where your playing hand sits. I was thinking purely asthetics when I drilled the hole there. One of kind..hahaha.

Shawn, start a discussion in Building a Cigar Box Guitar 101 for this and lets see what you have in mind (read: post a pic).

yes you can leave that small section alone and use a sander or such to thin out the headstock but then you,ll have a small drop, which most likley will not be noticeable, but if it were me I would do what matt towe said and maybe counter stink them I think that would be a lot simpler, you could use a forsner bit or a dremmel maybe. any port in a storm I say.

So if you leave the wood under the nut alone it should not change it's scale length.

shawn Ive not been to school for this but I will say this, if your nut is at the very end of the neck (before) the headstock. then you have to plain, say a quarter inch (or whatever) off the head stock that is going to move where your nut was toward the bridge (just a little but thats all it takes), so you are stuck with that or you have to move your bridge back toward the tailpiece to compensate, I accually had to do the same thing on my first build. but I had sunk my bridge in the box so I had to accually make another bridge behind the exsisting one. I pulled it off but I sure wasnt going to post any pics of it he he he
