First job to do on it is to turn a former , for spinning reso cones on , managed to locate some real thin alloy sheet 0.03mm think this should do the job nicely

Hey Ben - nice job on that turning I have a couple of books that talk about using Sycamore as a tone wood.... Hmmm maybe in place of those fiber tops I have been running into lately. Cool group

Thank you Randy for your invite to join this group, but I'm mainly a player and not a builder, but I have a few comments. lol. Don Young, the big man at National Resophonic told me during a phone conversation, that when building resonator guitars that plywood was actually better then solid wood. He compared it to a speaker cabinet. The more solid the box, the more sound goes out the cone. Plywood due to it's cross lamination makes it stronger than solid wood. So, not considering appearance, use plywood and veneer the face. As for regular acoustics, today guitars are build too solid with a heavy support system. Old 1930 Stellas where built out of Birch and had light ladder bracing. They rang like Hell's Bells. I hope this is helpful. Enjoy

Wow thats Cool Ben Nothing wrong with that mate :-) , yeah i also love wood with defects , always wanted to start turning hollow form vase's vessles ect , need to buy the right tools tho and again there not cheap !

the thing i love about turning is - it's the only form of shaping a lump of timber where you spin the actual timber , as apposed to working around the wood with say a router , saw , chisel ect:
Then theres the added bonus of applying finishes while the timbers still on the lathe , hav you used Button Polish yet ?
plus i love the sound of say a 80foot shaving comming from the wood and streaming over your shoulder , must make the effort to un clutter my shed you got me going now lol!

I got lucky with this one... I dont know what caused that patterning (some spore or other, a bit like spalting?), but I want more of it!!

Im fairly new to turning, but I like to use wood with 'defects' - this sycamore had a chunk out and a bit of spalting around the base.

Wish I had a maple tree that would just 'fall down'....
I like the idea of using these other woods Fernando. Pine etc is not usually used as it lacks strength for necks, and isnt very dense = poor tonewood. BUT we build cbgs using cardboard and plywood boxes right? A pine box wood be better than either! And why not laminate it (maybe with a simple truss rod?) for necks? You got to work with what you got bro :o)
The question of stability got me thinking too, so Iv posted a discussion on how to dry timber properly (without a kiln!).... maybe someone will be able to help you use that mahogany or oak.
Right, Il go take some pics of my bowl too... though Im definately not ready to carve hands and feet! Amazing stuff Juju!!

Just cut a slab off my fallen maple tree this morning and made it into a bridge for my in-progress gourd lute.
