Mike that is entirely up to you. I like 17", but I am in the minority there for sure. Mostly I like to choose the length based on the box, what looks good and what makes sense. A 24" instrument on a lil ol box is just silly, so I go from there.

Once you know your length, decide on a tuning (DAd, GDg, whatnot) and use this to figure your string gauges:

What would be a good scale length for a CB strum stick style guitar? And what would be a good size for the strings to use?

To my ears a major pentatonic is like a 'happy blues' or 'cheerful blues' if there is such a thing..
so u know..
happolin...
happimer
etc..

The major penta-cimer is still on the bench, hoping to start cutting into the tin this week. It got derailed by a couple of electric builds, but they are done and out of the way!

Since it is the first one, I think I'll cut the slots all the way across and insert partial frets. If it is a huge party to play, I'll make a full-out one with exotic woods and everything!

I am thinking now of also making a 2-string version tuned 1 1 in a lap style, for my dad. He won't pick up the regular stick kind I make, but maybe this will get him going. I have a paired set of boxes left (thanks, Sam!) so that's also in the queue now.

We need a better name, though. That writer guy came up with Blues-Box, which is pretty snappy. Penta . . . .

Thats a really slick looking site..!
nice..
its still Lady Di's baby as far as I'm concerned & very clever too..
any stick which is easy for beginners to sound good on is a great thing for music and our culture, most people give up on music because its too hard to get any 'instant gratification' from their instrument..
I've taught music a long time, and believe me, the quicker you can get a student sounding good to his own ears, the better your chances of making a musician out of him.
