Hey Diane--- I guess I'm just not getting it.
I understand the gauge size, but I thought if you wanted a DAD strummer, you need those strings.... whereas what is listed on Gitty's site is DF#A
-sorry for being so thick on this.
Sam--- really 7/8 is to much.... Crap ! Took me Hours to find it.
I thought I saw a vid that said 1x2 (maybe they assumed dressed, so 3/4 x 1 1/2)
Back to drawing board (grin)
jim
James, Gitty has the gauges on the web page for each set of strings. For the Open D set (D, F#, A), it looks like:
#1 - .034" Bronze Wound
#2 - .026" Bronze Wound
#3 - .017" Plain Steel
The string calculator for a 25" instrument says:
G - .032
D - .021
g - .016
So I'll bet those strings will work out if you use an open G tuning.
James,
1) 7/8" is plenty thick for a strummer neck strung with 3 or 4 light strings...
2) Assuming you end the fretboard at the box.... and, you place the nut off the end of the headstock end of the fretboard... then, the fret board is the VSL, minus how far onto the box from the neck end of the box you place the bridge.... ( for example, if you have a 24" VSL and you place the bridge in the middle of a 10 inch box, the fretboard would be 19" long 24-5=19 ... or, if you place the nut 1/3 from the tail end of a 9 inch box, you have an 18" fretboard... 24-6=18 ) Of course, if you extend the fretboard onto the box or if you place the nut, the fretboard is lengthen by those amounts.
hope this helps,
the best,
Wichita Sam
Finally found a couple long boxes !! And located some neck wood.
2 Quickies if anyone got a moment:
1) Neck wood. I got Brown Maple - 3 inch x 7/8 inch. Plan is to rip it into two 1.25" wide necks. Is 7/8" thick good ?
2) FRETBOARD: Given a standard 23-25 inch VSL, how long is a Fretboard for a typical 3 string Strummer? I might have found some 1/4" nice dark wood for fretboards cheap. They are 18-19" long
ps- Diane- I sent a message to Gitty.. waiting to see if he can tell me if I can use his strings to get DAD.... hate not being in the loop (some things don't come to me easily about this stuff <grin>)
----thanks everyone... so trying to get the supplies together !!
Hey, yup, saw it, saw the website. I understand it figures out string gauge, but what Im looking to know is, how to know which actual strings from a package. Example the ones at CB Gitty say 3 pack for Open D tuned D, F#, A... but open D on strummers are DAD, so I'm completely confused.
hey-
for stringing up a basic DAD strummer, what strings do I need to buy?
I was on CB Gitty site that sells 3 string packs, but they are for DF#A
Thanks
jim
Hi Mal...
The string gauge calculator Diane is referring to seems to want you calculate the gauge of each string separately. You need to know how you want to tune your instrument. Many are tuned to D-A-d; so, in this case, your first string is "d", the second is "A" and the third string is "D". Run the calculation for each string and those are the size strings you should use.
The way I figure it is a guitar string can usually be tuned a couple notes higher, so based on what's provided in a set of 6 guitar strings, I pick 3 strings which come closest to how I want to tune it. Not very scientific, but I rarely bust a string. Usually I end up using strings 2, 3 and 4 from a set of 6 guitar strings.
-Rand.
