Hey Joker-

You should be receiving my contribution in the next day or two. How did the museum gig go?

Best regards, Willie

I commented to Rustman privately, but that is a sweet looking two-stringer! I would love to hear some sound clips!

Just got the first acoustic sounds from the double-string. Cool oriental kind of sound and the longest sustain of any instrument I have ever built. Got to start to make the pickup. Pics will follow some day.

Started to build a double-string d-bow yesterday. I'll put some photos in my albums when it's ready.
Oh, played my candy tin diddly on a childrens song. It's going to be released this spring ;-)

I'll send you some instrumental stuff soon Joker (I broke my cable & finding an open music store at this time of year ain't easy) It'll probably be unusable but feel free to chop it apart producer style

I should add that for the CBG diddley bow, I am using a glass bottleneck on my left pinky finger to note the melody where it is not at a natural harmonic.

On the tentative tracks for my upcoming CD that is still in the works, I play the same song on WillardJ's Red Alligator lap-style diddley bow which uses a phosphor bronze guitar string and an Altoids tin bridge/resonator. In this case, I am also able to get an interesting (and hopefully not distracting) wah-wah effect by resting the heel of my picking hand (I use a guitar flatpick for this song) on the Altoids tin bridge to reduce the high frequencies, and then lift my hand to allow the high frequencies to come on strong, giving the wah sound. In this case I am using a flat glass bottle slide held palm up, and am using my index finger held UNDER the string to sound the harmonics and pluck the string. It was tricky to work that out!

It's kind of hard to tell from the youtube video, because the sound and video on youtube tend to be a little out of synch, but on the actual "Land Where the Blues Began" video, it is pretty clear that Napoleon Strickland is using the glass for a slide, and I would guess that it adds minimally to the sound as the vibration of the glass would be stopped somewhat by his fingers. The more interesting thing to me in this video is that he seems to be touching and perhaps plucking the string with one of the fingers holding the glass as well as "strumming" the string with his right hand index finger. This was described by Alan Lomax in the book, but I am not sure Alan understood what was actually going on. I have tried to emulate Napoleon Strickland's sound on "Wish I Was In Heaven Sittin' Down" on my "Store Bought Guitar Just Won't Do" CD. I am playing a cigar box diddley bow with a guitar pick, and touching the 12th fret position with my left index finger to get a harmonic. I am alsonusing the same index finger to pluck the string to sound the open string, so the pitch rhythmically jumps an octave between the open string and the harmonic. The is the closest I have come to Napoleon Strickland's sound.

Best regards, Willie

Napoleon Strickland Vid

Here's a short video of a guy named Napoleon Strickland playing a homemade diddleybow. This is the guy that Alan Lomax documented in his book "The Land Where The Blues Began", describing how he built, tuned and played a diddleybow. Don't know if this is the exact same one or not, but it's a great clip nonetheless. I reckon the drinking glass helped to amplify the sound?
