I have used the steel from electrician's fishing tape--the flat but somewhat flexible coil of steel that electricians use to fish elecrical wires inside walls.  You can buy a 25 foot tape for fairly cheap at Home Depot, which will make a lot of kalimbas.  My recollection is I bent the tape back and forth holding it with two vice-grips to break it, and then used a bench grinder to smooth the ends.

Best regards, Willie

Hey, Bluesheart. Cool. Do you know how they are tuned yet?
There's a wickedly cool program out there called KTabS (Kalimba Tablature Software) that allows you to to play lots of music in several different keys and it's FREE. The full version allows you to save, print etc and is worth the fee. As a BUILDER, it lets me find out how a kalimba will sound before I futz around with tuning it. Take a look:
http://ktabs.theirhouse.org/ktabsMain.php

With this software, you can run the free lessons Mark Holdaway has over in Kalimbamagic.com. There isn't a better deal out there, dude.

Just got two Kalimbas as gifts, so I guess it will just be a matter of time before I build some too! One has 7 tines and a coconut body, the other has 17 tines, a spruce top and vibe holes.

Henry, that was awesome! Well done!

Did you see the most recent Kalimba Magic newsletter? It has a pentatonic tuning pattern with redundant notes diagrammed. I changed my diatonic to that and it is much more fun to play. Like Maurice White of EWF!

http://kalimbamagic.com/newsletters/newsletter5.06/pentatonic_alto....

I did the G Major pentatonic, and I can play the E Minor by using a different home note. The doubled up notes are really cool for rapid fire repeats -- cant do that with a regularly tuned instrument!

Oooops...I just checked, and realized that I hadn't posted the earlier version. Oh well...the instrument used is my kalimba / lyre hybrid, the LYRA MBIRA.
