One - Two - Three - Four

Here's where we can work together to record some music. Anyone can participate, either adding a track or starting a new project. As always, there's no rules, but maybe to make it simple there should be some guidelines.

Obviously each project should be in a format that makes it easy for others to join in. Or not. Audacity is a Free, full featured music recording application available for Mac, PC and Linux which many members here use and can assist others with.

Some veterans may use more serious software that attracts more serious contributions. ProTools with a serious studio setup?

Let's make this a fun way for us to work together many miles apart.

All suggestions concerning how to make this easy and fun are welcome, and everyone is invited to join in. HAAAAA, if your track doesn't fit the song, it can always be deleted...

Well Nation, let's make some music together!

Ted

So what if we all picked a song and worked around that. One I have i mind to do personally is "Trouble in Mind". I've been singing that to myself for a week now. I'm gonna CBG-ize that soon.

One thing I think any contributor here might want to think about is no matter how they create their contribution -- mic, direct input, osmosis (heh):

1) post your file telling us the key its in or your tuning.
2) if you can on the same or separate file, a simple open chord or a note in your tuning. I use OpenD / D7 or Open G. I would strum a chord or at least the low D for us to tune to.
3) If you are using Audacity, might be helpful to open the file (mp3?), do your work, save just your channel as well as the mixed file. this might be interesting as others can take yours, loop it, or otherwise edit.
4) one post had beat counts at the beginning. Again if you use Audacity that would be easy to do as a separate channel (Click Track). See example attached.

Hey what if I created some click tracks at different speeds around 2 min long. Upload them as MP3 for folks to use. Idea?

Marice,

Confusing. Sorry. Not to be contrary but, Weizel is saying the exact thing you are, and you even mention MP3s as low quality (yes, lower than the original format). So we three are really talking the same thing here, rather the approach in how to get there.

I still think Audacity is going to be more preferred here tho its going to take some of us some time in understanding how to use it. Being we all seem to have computers (we are indeed on this site via a computer). I also believe in sending up your track as a separate file (not mixed) to save space and if the next contributor doesn't want your addition, doesn't have to use it. I do agree tho that you can push up whatever file you want (WAV, MP3, Ogg, etc) as your contribution, but keep in mind if its mixed, its impossible to separate.

Maurice, you are correct that uploading individual track files makes for the widest interoperability, with MP3s making sense for low-fidelity tracks used as "backing" for people laying down new tracks, and WAV for the high-fidelity mixdown.

Using an AUP project that someone else uploaded is basically like downloading all the WAV files of all the individual tracks, along with the information used to mix them. Some folks (e.g., those not already invested in alternative equipment / software) might find it easier to work within the "shared Audacity project" model.
