Here's a sound sample (In the Pines and the slide on Fishin' Hole) of 200ft of 30 around 3 button mags, sandwiched between two pieces of that really tough packaging that electronics are packed in. It's kinda cool to see the actual wire. The output isn't very high so it's good to run it through something else first. I've got a little 4-track mixer that I usually run multiple guitars into so that they all come out relatively the same. Always makes the sound guys happier.

By contrast, this lap steel, built in kind of a P90 style, has 42 from Stewmac...and alot more output!

Basically what Ben said. Yes, it will work; you'll get kind of a clean clear output that's not very loud.

Where to get 42 gauge wire. Personally, I would go with the 1/2 pound spool of 42 Poly from Mojotone.com for $25. It will save you $5 off the Stew Mac price. "Poly" refers to the type of insulation, aka polyurethane.
