I'm constructing a 5-string banjo with plans to stretch a tanned 14" goat hide of medium thickness across a drum head. How much tension do you place on a wet hide when stretching across a drum head? Unless otherwise advised, I will tighten a radiator hose-type clamp around top of cavity and decorate clamp with large headed furniture tacks.

I'd label myself a novice banjo player still learning chords and accurate timing. My strongest weakness is listening to banjo blues, streaming KRVM.org's "Breakfast With The Blues". I'd like to improve my playing skills to enjoy others with similar interests. The Oregon Old Time Fiddlers provide ample local jamming opportunities to help me with this task. They are patient when I slow "Cluck Old Hen" down to a swampy twang. The CigarboxNation has some talented members. I'm watching for discussions on building a blues banjo. I hope to take advantage of their knowledge in belly size, strings, and other accessories; questions a novice player does not know what to ask.

Hi All,

I just wanted to mention here that there is a interesting discussion thread going on in the 'Building Secrets, Tips, Advice, Discussion' discussion group. The thread is about making your own drums, and includes links to another web site about how to bend the wood to form the frame and sources for skin, as well as a discussion about using a synthetic material called Dupont Tyvek for the drum head. Here's the link: Banjo BUILDERS, skin question. It's an interesting read.

I came a cross this thread on banjo making which may have been the one that lead to the formation of this discussion group. Anyways, there's some good ideas here you may want to read: cigar box banjo. I'm sure there's more bajo info around here on CBN that you can find by using the CBN built in search engine.

I'm got a factory-made steel-stringed banjo that's got a geared 5th-string tuner like the ones on stewmac. I used to have a steel-stringed friction-5th. On by home-made nylon-stringed banjo, I used violin pegs. You need to have a properly tapered reamer too.

The 5th tuning peg is different, check out stewmac.com they sell single 5th string tuning machines and full sets.

Hi AFKAM.

That's a nice looking CBB. I was wondering on 5-string banjos, do they use a special tuning peg (machine tuner) for the 5th string, or is it just a plain old geared tuner? It's been so long since I've seen a real banjo, I can't remember. If anyone else knows, please enlighten us.

Well, I posted a pic of a 3 string dulcijo in the dulcijo thread ....

How about a 5 string banjo?
