I don't think anything beats open E (E-B-e) on a three string slide. To me it has a growl that just can't be matched.
Here are my own examples
try (DGb) its the 3 open notes of a G on a six string soloing is eazy if you play guitar. and it slides chords nice. alot of my tunings on 4 string are realy 3 string tunings with a double lead string (DGbb) dont be afraid to tune around just strum and tune one string till you hear something you like
Here is a take on open G that I came up with to play some Duane Allman slide stuff. Allman would tune to open E for most of his slide work, but I couldn't get it to sound right on the four string box I made. So I took the idea of transposing regular open E up to a G, as if you tuned your guitar to open E then put a capo on the third fret, (then you don't use the top two strings). So what I came up with was this "G-B-d-g" (top to bottom). It gives you the root note on both the top and bottom strings, and makes classic Allman Brothers Band type of call and answer riffs really easy.
Funny how the Tuning Spirit knows best!
