I'm sure this has been covered before but I haven't got it right yet (slow learner) :-(
I have mounted one of CB Gitty's bass pups up close under the metal plate on the treble side, I have also grounded the plate to eliminate some noise but I don't seem to get good sound. It sounds muddy. Am I counting on the plate to do the vibrations here and do the strings play any role other than vibrating the plate?? any suggestions.

Well, the whole damn thing went kabloooie!!!! Well, sort of - I've pulled the neck off and starting another one - the add on of wood didn't work out and I knew that ever time I looked at it, it would bug me - so..... good thing I've got stacks of firewood to whittle away at. I'll let you guys see the new one when it is ready.
Jawbone, I am an electronics dunce. But my understanding is that when you put the pup under the plate it kind of acts like a piezo and picks up sound like bumping the box and bumping the neck. So to me that kind of defeats the purpose off a mag pup. Might as well use a piezo under the plate- which I have done with decent success.
I have put some pups on the neck just above boxes, license plates and a hubcap. I like these. They sound warm to me.
I have also cut into the plate and made a slot for a pup. That one has a bad hum that I need to work on. Right now it is set aside as it ticks me off.
I suggest you look at Maddog's photos. He has made a lot of license plate gits. I have played several of these and they are very good. He is a good guy and would likely give advice if asked.
Hey Unc - I think this is what I may try (ahead of the box on the neck) I have built many with piezos in the bridge, under the plate, in the neck, combinations of both, etc. For some reason, on this one, I hate to puncture the box. I may end up doing that but I'm going to try every other option this time - force myself to try something new. I'll check out Maddog's page. Thanx
I think you will be happy with the tone on a neck mount.
Hey guys - I think the route I'm gonna try is add some "decorative" wood where the neck joins the box and mount the pup, and just for fun add frets up to the 5th fret. The little pup is not quite 2 cm thick so I only need to route out about 1 cm into the neck. But I may do some more experimenting before I start cutting.
If I understand correctly, you want the plate too resonate. Then why could you not go with a rod piezo under the bridge with a bone saddle and nut..I have used this approach, and was happy with the result.
I have also went with a single coil in the plate, and to me personally....all it did was sound like a regular electric guitar, with a small hint of substain.
Go for it Manny - It's heavy as heck - it makes a very formidable weapon!!!! My Brother in law gave me that plate at Xmas and that got me thinking about that hood ornament that has been hanging around for years. I had to build the box a little bigger than normal to accommodate the length of the Chief.
