If it doesn't need specifically to be an actual cigar box, do a search for an 8 compartment tea box.
This will give you the depth you need for most any type of build.
You can even drop underneath and get a dog bowl to fit with one of these with a bolt on neck. I know this because I've done it.

Yes and very much worth doing. Done right and you'll have a guitar that sounds and plays exactly like a store bought one. 

Remember to have plenty of support for the pull your going to get from all six strings. I built a semi hollowbody out of plywood.
