Building a 7 layer laminated neck (alternating oak with poplar) and want to scarf the head join. Is it practical to do this by hand? I do have a compound saw but not sure if it would cut at 15 degrees so am thinking of making a simple mitre box. Antone done this with any success before? This is for a CBG P-Bass btw.....

Is that 14 degrees?

If you're asking me, yes

Thanks! I'll try it. This is all new for me.

I have to disagree with the statement that one-piece necks are stronger, as someone who's had Gibsons and Epiphones with broken heads. On a one-piece neck, the grain is running diagonally to the headstock, making it a weak point. With a scarf joint, the grain is running parallel to the head, which makes the head much stronger. So, if you can get a good strong joint at the scarf, you have the overlay on the headstock or, even better, the fingerboard reinforcing the scarf joint. Personally, I prefer the method where the fingerboard reinforces the joint.

Well, I went with the one-piece setup. The blank looks pretty good and I'll start shaping it tomorrow. Hope you're wrong Busy, and that the head holds. am using vertical laminate and it seems to be really strong. I've cut the head to 5/8" and will make sure that the radii are nice and smooth....fingers crossed

Marcus,

You'll be fine. With a 7 piece laminate, turned vertical, you don't have to worry about grain running diagonally, etc. That advice about broken headstocks on old Gibbys and Epis is true, because the necks and headstocks were formed from a SINGLE piece of hardwood. The laminations solve that problem, so you can justifiably go with a single piece. I do my necks from two pieces of 5-ply lauan, and have done one as a single piece with no scarf just fine. Only reason I do scarfs now is to minimize waste, as I get my wood as scrap. I also am now adding mahogany fretboards, mainly because I like the look and it helps with setting string height properly. I do my scarfs setting the headstock on top, for the same reason Eric said. But either way works. These are CBGs, after all.
Well, here she is. Picked up a piece of Mexican ebony for the finger board. Neck is going into an identical cookie tin to my 4 string. Think it looks ok....

Nope - I'm just north of Barrie but I seen that story about Fort Henry Halloween on Canada AM and it looked like a lot of fun - if I was closer I'd be going. I could sit in a corner playin' my CBG - that would sure scare them!!!

Hey, I LOVE Barrie. Was ther a couple of years ago for the dog agility thang. We had a blast and also got hooked on the damn flying monkeys....

Stayed in a cheapish motel and it was awesome. Everyone in Barrie smokes doobie.....I was quite surprised.....
