Really dry box

This box is really dry and a bit weak but I really like it. Any suggestions to sure up the dryness

I used this stuff ...looks good and toughened up the box...did 4 coats but still a bit splintery...might have to sand a bit or leave rough feel.

I here you on that....I'll prob sand it gently as this wood is a weird barnyard type...I like the clear varnish so far as it's really helped sturdy the box and give it moisture..it doesn't smell quite as bad as other varnished either.
