In my experience, the rod needs to be placed under the bridge in such a way that the bridge is applying pressure to the rod in order for it to really work properly.

Normal disc piezos don`t pick up much in the way of vibrations needed through metal tops so you are correct in using a rod piezo. However, rod piezos will only work (properly) if they have direct pressure on them from the strings.Hence they need to be placed under the bridge, maybe encased in a cylinder of some kind, to get the best from them.

I use a mild steel tube to surround mine and hot glue both ends to achieve the required pressure and boy do they pick up sound.Loud!

Found the problem. It was the plug in on the prewired harness. Plug did not fit so well nothing a little dab of hot glue could not fix. I did install the piezo rod under the bridge as recommended. Sounds good.

A basic rod piezo bridge...1/8" slot through wood block for the rod and make a 1/8" thick saddle for on top of the rod.
