Hi all,

Been lurking here a few days, just popped on to see how and what (well the basics) of building a CBG.

I have a few things people on the sites on the web know me for, one is recycling/re-purposing for my own benefit, more than the environment.

I am also from the "Monkey See, Monkey Do" school of thought.

Between my wife Nicola and I we have a few interests, she collects smoking pipes and associated "stuff" and has a 1956 Ford Anglia, known as Myrtle, which she chose over an engagement ring when we decided to get married (She does have a thing for diamonds though and got her ring in the end) She is also a great partner in crime, because she both encourages some of my hobbies and interests and allows me to come into the house late from the shed without putting my dinner in the bin.

I have a 1963 Ford Taunus Transit, which I imported from Germany in very late 2007. It was a former village fire engine. Last year we built a Grumann style Teardrop trailer, known as the "Grizz-Pod" as she was named by the members on www.retrorides.proboards.com which is where a lot of what I do gets posted in the Readers other Modifications section. Here is a LINK:

One of the guys I have become great friends with on www.mikenchell.com which is a USA based Teardrop site sent me a small parcel at the end of last year with various items, including Catnip for our cats, some handmade silver jewelery, and a few CBG starter bits, including a cigar box.

I DO NOT PLAY A NOTE OF MUSIC....... But absolutely love music, so was up for the challenge.

I will copy and paste my build progress here for you guys to give input and advice on.

This was the first entry:

Tonight on the way home from London, my wife Nicola texted me to ask if she could open a parcel that had been addressed to Mr & Mrs "Grizz"  Of course I said, who is it from ? She texted back Gary in Oklahoma, and then refused to tell me what was in it, except that she loved the contents.

When I got home she gave me a cuppa tea, let me greet the cats etc, then presented me with the box in the photo below.

I will not explain it all, but will say that there was a challenge in the total package..... now the trick is for you guys to figure it out and let us know if you can see what the challenge is that Gary put to me. It is not too cryptic, just look at the contents and think a bit latteraly.

Thanks Gary. .... there goes my holiday break  8)

All three the cats went mad for the catnip, a super charged variety grown for Garys cats.

If you want to see more, let me know..... I do take progress pics a lot.

For those with an interest in old cars etc.... here are the cars.

OOOPPPSSS....

Looks like my linking does not work to bring the pics straight up, so will need to figure that out.

Right, this first posting i a mess, please click on the links for the pics, I have to go to the shops now......

Will do other postings using the system on here.

Hi Rian, love the pic of the cats ...!  nice motors too, had a few Classics in my motoring history, started with a 1949 Morris MM...wonder where she is now....?

Monkey see Monkey do is ok at first but soon Monkey must think for himself....welcome to the 'Nation!

let's see...cigar box, photo of a wood, plectrum made from a gold Amex card, soundhole rings, dreamcatcher feathers,  coin, sweets, catnip to keep the cats away and some jewelry for the missus while you're buried in your building- i guess you could make a guitar from the wood and dream sweetly...or something like that...?? (-:

Hi Steve, correct !

I then needed to start digging about for bits to add together to make a CBG.

Knowing I cannot string two notes together means that everything is based on either reading up or just doing what feels right.

Down to the garage, and found a piece of stair ballustrading that came from a hospital that I used to visit as part of my last job, which was having a refurbishment.

I had a carcass of a guitar I saved from the tip a few years ago, which could work as a donor for some bits.

Pretty and ornate bits.

...there you have it!   happy building - if you get stuck all the folks on here love giving advice (-;

I also advertised on my local "Freecycle" for a broken electric/accoustic guitar, and got one reply from a lady who had rescued a guitar from a skip about 20 years ago, but it had come apart at some point......

So I collected it and got this one, so the other one was returned to the loft for another day.

KANSAS - Made in Romania.

Cut the ballustrade and also inspired a few Diddley Bows to be built....

This was the first attempt, soon followed by a few other strings, made by another guy on www.RetroRides.proboards.com

While researching the the whole CBG thing I ended up finding that I really like the sound of a well played Diddley Bow.

Decided to make one.... and the first part I found in the grass was half a hinge.

Cut to shape.

Cut some flames into it.

Strung up with an old string from the donor guitar, and used a Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney tin as a resonator, as it was going to be accustic.

Brought it indoors and Nicola imediately tried to pull some sounds from it, using an elamel mug for a slide and a bit of fabric softner bottle as a plectrum.

Later on I tried various ways to get some sound from it, and found a shot glass and a screwdriver used to strike, rather than pluck the string worked best.

As mentioned, I have no musicality, so the first 30-60 seconds probably gives you all you need to know.

Back to the CBG build.

Sanded the wood, mask is mainly because the dust made me cough when I had ripped it on the saw.

Dismantled the donor.

Measured the neck and decided to go for a slanted head.

Cut on the bandsaw....

Laid out the box on the wood to get an idea of what I wanted to do.

Found and stripped some rivets to make ferulles

Offered cut off neck to cigar box to get placement of recesses that needed to be cut.

Used a hacksaw to cut down as I had more control over it.

Nice tight fit.

Cut out and chisseled out the neck under the box lid.

Ferules in, USA Quarter sent by Gary will go into the neck somewhere.

Soundholes drilled and canvas eyelets fitted.
