Hi all I am all together new to all of this. I got my very first banjo this past Saturday and I can now play marry had a little lamb. It is a pie plate banjo made by a good friend that has made close to four hundred banjos. I started looking and found this place and that I can make my own out of a cigar box. I have made many projects out of wood and have a nice shop and thought I would give it a try. I make custom longbows and figured this would be a bit easier and less work. Being new to the guitar and making one figured I would ask for any and all help I can get. I have a few boxes and know how to make the neck but would like to know where to get the misc. other parts. Thanks and glad to be here.

Welcome and enjoy. I have half a longbow made standing in the corner of my garage. I will get to it one day when i have sorted out an "equalizer thingo!"

You have started well with a pie plate banjo, some of the early plans were for that instrument.

When I started i was told to put the following words to music and sing them all day.

"Cigar Box Nation is my best friend" I am sure you will make it fit to "Mary had a little Lamb".
Kevin, if you can manage the neck you are pretty well home. The only crucial parts you will need are tuners, which you can buy at some place like Guitar Center or scrounge from a pawnshop wreck guitar, and strings: whatever you've got can be made to work; you can get strings at GC, WalMart, Target, wherever; the cheapest you can find should be fine, since your likely to break a few when restringing after an adjustment.
Welcome to the Nation Kevin. I look forward to seeing some of your work. I think Ebay, Musicans Friend, and Stewart Mcdonald are good places to start if you need some misc. parts. I have found that a lot of people here though believe in not purchasing anything and using whatever you can find Lying around. But they also say "there are no rules". Good luck on your build.
Ebay is a great place to look for mechanics, as doing them yourself can be very frustrating, especially as the home made ones often have tuning issues...

Fretwire seems to differ from matches to hardwire nails, and anything in between, often glued down with dual cmponent glues or instant glues.

As you mentioned you already have some woodwork experience, you will obviously realise that with the neck of a CBG you don`t want it to be flexible like a longbow, so supporting through the neck wit a piece of oak or some oter wood to hold the string tension is a must, otherwise you will end up with another longbow with more strings....
"Saludos my darling, and you know who you are, but I don't...."

Seriously, Welcome and here in the nation, we understand addictions. We're here to support yours as well. Ask away. Oh, and you prolly seen the really great plans and videos up top ^, but if you haven't, check 'em out. Let us know when you build and post your pictures -- even clock pictures < you'll get that in a moment >.
Welcome to the forum. CBG Anonymous is just around the corner! This place has no rules so sure would like to see some pictures of your longbows posted. Also there is a thread her where people have been telling some about themselves. You might want to put your bio and that. It is nice to know a little about all the friends here.

Parts? I don't have any good local music stores so i search the Internet. E-bay, and Stewart McDonald are the ones I have used the most.

Stewart McDonald also have a nice fret spacing calculator.

here is a pic of two longbows I make, as to a request....
Thank yoy! Those are nice, something I'd like to try one of thess days. What kind of wood does a person need? The must be a forum on building these. Something else to look into.

I use Osage and Yew wood mostly but you can use others. The wood has to be able to compress and not splinter the back side as well. Other woods would be, hickory, Vine maple, Ipe, Blood wood, Purple Heart, The list goes on and on. So to say the least I know I am a newbie but I do have a tun of great wood on hand to build some nice CBB or CBG. I am going to start with the three string and see what happens. I would love to put a pick up in it so I will be asking how to do that when the time comes. Seems easy enough. Thanks for the help and welcoming.
Kevin,
Google Stewart MacDonald. Great catalog with affordable prices. Good luck.
Thanks and I hit up Radio Shack today but I would like to get them in a large number.
looking for tuners, fret wire, pick up or pezio thingy. I checked out the site that Monte told me about and they seem to have what I need. I am also trying to find Cohiba boxes and they seem to be hard to find.
