EASY TO BUILD CIGAR BOX GUITAR: AN UNCLE CROW STYLE CBG IN ONE HOUR!!

Today we're going to have a step-by-step cigar box guitar building class!  The total time to build is about one hour, not including the introduction video, or video 8, where we're just playing the guitar.

Build a three string, slide cigar box guitar with the following items:

Materials

  • wooden cigar box - $3
  • 1x2  - $1
  • three eye bolts, 3/16" x 3" , 24 thread - $1.50
  • six #8 washers - $.98
  • three wing nuts, 3/16", 24 thread - $.98
  • three 6/32 machine screws with matching nuts - $.98
  • machine bolt, 1/4" x 2" long - $.98
  • guitar strings, one pack - $5
  • three wood screws - 1 1/2" long - $.98

These items are really much cheaper than i list here. most of them are bought in bulk, so for just a little more money you could build a LOT of guitars. The prices listed above are the average hardware store price, if you were to buy the item in small numbers in individual bags from the pegs in the fasteners section.

Tools

  • drill
  • 1/2" paddle bit for three sound holes (you could use 1/4 bit with six holes)
  • regular smaller drill bits
  • phillips bit
  • hand saw (box saw is best)
  • sand paper

Additional items

  • guitar picks can be bought at most box stores
  • slides can be bought at home depot. go to the cabinet section, and ask for a 2" long 3/4" steel spacer. they cost $1.50, and are the best slides i've ever used!!

FRET CALCULATION AND FRET MARKERS

Fret Markings:  THANKS TO DAZEDLEMONPIE, the following fret measurements have been transcribed for us, and i've copied and pasted them here.

"i just written down all the fret measurement from part 5 of the video, I thought I would share it with those interested in building one.

The following are based on scale length of 59cm

59cm multiply .9439 (or any other scale length) equals your first fret location.  It should be marked as follows:

  1. 55.6cm
  2. 52.5cm
  3. 49.6cm   0
  4. 46.8cm
  5. 44.2cm  0
  6. 41.7cm
  7. 39.3cm   0
  8. 37.1cm
  9. 35cm

Still waiting on that video crow! Don't mean to rush you but I could sure use some help transposing some classic tunes to the three string CBG. Been trying to do crossroad blues and others. But I'm sure you could provide some valuable insight.

hey turk, i fail to see where anyone is measuring from fret to fret. this is a calculation based on the initial scale lenght, as stated in the video

but yes, measuring from fret to fret is a sure way to mess up big time! make sure the measuring tape is clamped down, and that the zero mark is at the bridge location, and there should be very little room for error

thanks for all the input guys! :D

i have finished my take on the Crow Style CBG, and it just freaking rock ! I had to redo the neck coz i screwed up the scaling. Will post pictures as soon as i get home

ps: showed the wife how it sounded and she immediately took it and played for hours, i literally had to fight her to get it back.....wahahahhaa   And she doesnt even play guitar.

I am on to my 2nd Crow this week......!!!! with piezo pickup so i can share clips how it sounds.

Crow and fellow CBN crew, I have uploaded pictures of my version following crow's tutorial, feel free to check it out.

Thanks Crow, it was a great learning experience, and already planning on the next one,,,,,damn i am cursed....lol

Hello CB Nation!  This is my first post and my first CBG build.  I've known about CBGs and have been wanting to build for a while, but never had the time until recently.  This was also my first time working with wood and tools and stuff so I made a lot of mistakes.  I learned from each one though and I'm working on a second build.

I went with Uncle Crow's design when I stumbled on his youtube series on building.  I tried the eyebolt tuners but I didn't quite understand how to make them work correctly so I ended up getting a set of cheap tuners.  I also glued the neck to the body and added a little neck heel.  I marked out fret lines and used a box cutting blade to make little fret slots.

Finally I added a piezo and glued the box shut.  The guitar is for my 5 yr old son, so I didn't really want him opening the box and tearing components out.

Last thing I plan on doing to make it complete is to glue some nuts to the little string openings so the strings don't cut into the wood.

Thanks to uncle crow for the youtube vids.

Edit:  More pictures up on my profile.

Glad to hear there's an electric version built! I'm going to make my second guitar an Uncle Crow variant-this will be my first experience with both Frets and Non-acoustic (the first was fretless acoustic with slide) and i'm understandably nervous...

Given that the best location for the piezo (so i've heard) is directly under the bridge...where the heck do you place the Piezo on an Uncle Crow Dulcimer-style neck? Did you drill a hollow directly under the bridge bolt, attach directly to the anchor bar beneath, glue to the face near the end of the neck, or something more esoteric? Inquiring minds need to know, please...

Oh, and as far as Saving the wood from string scratches-my first build and this coming one make use of 1" aluminum pop rivets. Just pop those guys gently in a vise and tap the rod out backwards with a hammer-you've got 1" string sleeves!

wow what a great bunch of videos ..........crackin build !!!!

Great job with the videos, quick question as to why you use the back of the cigar box instead of the front to atttatch the neck  thnaks

I won't presume to speak for Uncle Crow's reasoning on his builds....but judging from my experiences emulating said build these past few days,i'd say it's because there's more both more room to mount the bracing block. Also, the side of the box provides an additional point of contact/support for the bracing block and the entire back and sides may give a little more support when closed than just the lid singly.

The thing that really sold me on his 'back of the box' design though-you can fasten the lid with the catches, screws latches or even tape of your choice, and undo it at will for maintenance or modification...without...unstringing....the...guitar! I can open the lid and see how the build sounds Open Frame like a banjo, screw or tape a tuna can to the bracing block to see how it sounds Resonator-style, tape my Piezo in a few different locations until I get what I want out of this cheap practice amp(doing that right now as I type)-well, you get the point..

Oh, and BTW Uncle Crow...THANK YOU! My second build sounds fantastic! I can't even play guitar and it sounds good! I honestly assumed that this build would need to be Electric due to the elevated Dulcimer-style neck design you used-but the tone Acoustic is amazing...I did cut the head and used commercial tuners since the local music store replaces entire sets of tuners when one breaks and I can grab a whole bag of 'leftovers' for nearly nothing. Now if only I could afford a PC-ready camera and let you see what you helped me accomplish...again, Thank You for this design and these videos!

three 6/32 machine screws with matching nuts

How long should these be?   I am interested in trying a crow-method cbg.
