Hi guys,

I'm starting a new build, and was thinking of going to town and add brass corners and grommets. The question I have is, does the clutter glued, screwed or bolted to the lid of a box cause a noticeable change in the box's volume?

Also, I get the idea of a sound hole allowing the sound to escape from the box, but any cutting to the box's lid would cause the quality of the resonance to dip. Is there an optimum sound hole size to get the best of both worlds?

(I've added a photo of the box I'll be using, just for a point of reference.)

Cheers

Hedley

You know what? I've got loads of boxes collected, I might just use one for practice. If I goes well, I might try it on this box.

So its eye candy or ear candy I like both;-)

Yup! I know that the bottom of the boxes would resonate better, but there's no way I'm hiding the lid design.

Don't count out lid on the back Vinyl this gives you a soundboard with sides and more options on how to attach the lid.

Of course you're right. But it seems such a shame,

A sound hole (or holes ) on the side , facing up at the player , is another option .  This option will direct more sound at the player .     The box you have looks like it would look good with groment covered sound holes , one on each side .  My opinion !

...And a valued opinion it is too.

Told you Vinyl pandoras box. I love reading oily's comments on these post,

I was typing fast as I could as to be the first post when i hit add

there was Ron's post hope you got enough ideas from everyone.

When you go to cut your sound ports start small

you can alway make the hole bigger, if you use grommits

your size is set to big a hole you won't be happy.

My electric don't have sound ports

I  like the way they sound in a dark quiet room  Thats a Guy Clark line. but it true.

Guy's a guitar builder seen his shop in one of the Townes Docs.

One last thing look for solid wood boxes,

many reasons but you can sand the sound board to any thickness.

Good Luck Dude.

Cheers, RTZ. I was just canvasing people's views on the subject, only to completely ignore the sage advice and screw it up.

I didn't know Guy Clark made guitars. I like him all the more now.

P.S.

Every time I see your name, I see this in my head:

Ehhhh...we all know RTZ is crackers.;-)

Heeeeeyyyyyyy I can read alittle, i'm right here!!!!!!!!

I can hear you.....

I know. If you were a ghost, there'd be chains rattling, or something. >:-E
