Yeah - That's what I'm gonna try tomorrow out in the shop - Hell, I've spent way more time than that to save a few bucks !!! Besides - the fun's in the makin' !!

I know one guy that has bypassed the whole finger pick thing by having acrylic nails shaped for playing on his picking hand.

I've heard of many acoustic players doing this.  I have relatively heavy duty nails and use liquid nail hardener (probably just clear nail polish) on mine.  Being a builder/player it is a challenge to keep perfect playing length without busting them up badly.

I only play steel strings and my hardened natural nails do wear, but it is at a manageable rate.  I do have to reprofile them with an emery board after playing.  I may or may not use 400 grit sandpaper scraps every once in awhile too.

I tried these and didn't care for them any better than standard finger picks (which I also don't like).  So that's probably not much of a data point.

I found that the tactile advantage of having the open finger pads was not as much as advertised.  To me anyway.
