Hello, folks.  This is Tony from Sacramento.  I have tried in vain to play the geetar.  I played the ukelele fairly well till my wife sat on it (true).  I'd like to get a CBG.  It seems like most of the music on this site is dedicated to 3-String, but 4 string seems more versatile to me.  Any thoughts on which would be best to start?

Thanks!

Tony,

Welcome! You may want to join the CBGs in California group here to hook up with local builders and players in your area:

Because you already play ukelele, you can even build or purchase a CBU. And since you're already familiar with 4-strings, I'd go for a 4-banger for the increased versatility. But if you get into this deep enough, you'll soon have one or more of each, especially if you are at all woodcrafty.

Sacramento? There is a fairly regular cbg meet-up at the Strumshop in Roseville. Check the group Oily mentioned. I think folks bring them to sell, also!

Gotta go with Wayfinders opinion, 4 string it is!

I prefer 4 string myself, some reasons here.... :-)

Hi Tony.  I mostly build and try to play 4 strings.  I did build a 3 string and I like it pretty well. There seem to be more lessons, etc for the 3 string.  I guess you can handle 4 strings if you played a uke.

By the way, good timing.  There is going to be a CBG meeting in Roseville, at the Strum Shop on Sunday, June 7 1PM until about 4.  You will see some of everything there and some builders and players to talk to.  Some ukes too.  Come join us if you are able.
