Hi everyone

Down here on the English Riviera there are quite a few music pubs but I have yet to see a Cigar Box player in the spotlight (apart from when I braved it playing in the town square a while back with the ukulele club!) despite the esteemed Hollowbelly being a local resident.  So I was thinking about organising a sort of open mic but a little more polished than that.

Perhaps like me you have a set that could last 20-30 minutes but feel that a whole evening of your stuff might be a bit much – after all variety is the spice of life and all that.  I have agreed with a local publican that we could put on a little event at her pub here on a Sunday afternoon/evening (at a push I could make it a Saturday but she usually has acts booked well in advance) – no fees for players I am afraid but maybe a beer or two.  I am planning to call it a “Cigar Box Shindig” for want of a better name.   It’s not a big pub so it would be quite an intimate affair – not too daunting for the newbies.   I know there are some local players as I have sold them guitars through our music shop but I am buggered if I know who/where they are!

I am thinking sometime in late June or July and may tie it in with a local festival or something to attract more punters.  Maybe you fancy a weekend in Devon? If it takes off we could have another one and possibly tie in with the blues festival next year which is held at the end of May a few miles down the road and there are usually skiffle bands playing but no CBG’s yet!.

So if anyone is interested in taking part and helping educate the locals please get in touch. I am thinking me plus four or five others (depending on your set) would make a nice mini fest with something for all tastes.   I can't provide accomodation I am afraid but we live round the corner form the pub so will have a local base to meet up beforehand.   I can lay on some basic equipment and may be able to borrow a decent PA.  Let's see if a bit of team effort can pull it off!  All the best Brian

OK so this is how it is looking so far - any more for any more!
That is looking great, we have about 9 songs in the set lasting approx 30-40 minutes, although that can obviously be shortened to fit in with the event if necessary
I was hoping for aound 40 (give or take) minutes if that's OK - I will open up and introduce the gig so at the moment with you guys and CJ and HB and Steve T we should have about 3 hours worth of music(?) and I am inviting some more local people to maybe do an open mic piece as well - time permitting.  Assuming all goes to plan we should get a fair bit of local publicity.  I am going down there in a while and will shoot a short video so you can all see what the place looks like and where we will set up the gear.

Yeah 40 minutes is fine by us

the poster looks great Brian tho' i haven't got a stage name...Steve T will do for now, that's how everyone at work calls me...any other suggestions..? how about "Slowpaw" (-;

will have maybe 4 to 6 songs sorted out, maybe 20 minutes..?

provisionally including -

Lost Dog Blues, In my time of dying, You Got to Move, Vigilante Man and two or three othres i am working on.

though i am no stranger to the stage as an actor this will be my first live music job ..!

Ok sounds good to me - especially Steve Slowpaw!  I don't have one either which is why I haven't put myself on the list MrRW is a bit long winded and not very bluesy!

Hi Brian

This is sounding good - If I can get there as a spectator I will. Bit of a drag from Kent but hey-ho it'll be worth it if I can get off work on the Monday.

I've got a few HGMC flyers left over from a recent festival I attended/leaflet-dropped here in Rochester, what I'll do is stick 'em in the post to Chickenbone John and he can bring them with him and hand them out on the day.

If I don't make it fella, have a great day - post some video on here so that we can all enjoy it!

Catch up with you in West Brom later in the year, if not before.

Malc

Hi Malcolm

well you wouldn't be the only traveller from Kent as 2 of your nearly neighbours in Sidcup are playing! So maybe you could hook up.  The more the merrier as with all these things.  Lesley will be filming it again as part of her ongoing documentary project but I am sure some videos will land on the internet

Cheers

Brian

Hey guys - here's a thing - I contacted the guy who is running the Ashburton Blues Festival this month  (Muddy Waters Jnr, Wilko Johnson and The Pretty Things headlining) to ask whether he has considered CBG music for any of the fringe gigs - his reply:

"Hi Brian - I'm ashamed to say I'm not aware of  CB Guitars, until now!  Some of them sound great. If I'm around for your Festival I'll come over and check it all out.

Do say 'hello' at Ashburton"

At least he is honest - so I had better get down there and spread the gospel!
