i'm wanting to build a CBG, obviously.  i have read that quite a few people use a 1"x2" piece of wood for the neck for 2 and 3 string CBG's.  my question is this:  is that an actual 1"x2" measurment or is it the lumber yard nomenclature for for something that is actually 3/4"x 1 1/2"?  thanks so much, and holy cow am i learning a lot!  this place is great!

That is the lumber yard name for the 3/4 x 1 1/2. I cut my own from 2x 1 3/4. The 3/4 inch thick board seems a bit thin to me.
thank you!!!

here's what i have so far.  the box used to house some very high end Bontrager bicycle cranks where i work.  the cranks got installed on a bike and the box was going to be thrown away, so i kept it.  i've been hanging onto this box for about 5 years, which is really kind of pathetic if you think about it.  haha!
5 years I've got socks older than that! lol.  Neat box should be a good start on your cigar box (crank box) adventures.  One bit of advise, make the fingerboard on the neck raised higher than the box face, soundboard. It will make it easier to play and add to the sound some.  If your neck is already fitted to the box, it looks like it is, you can add a 1/8-1/4 piece to the top to raise it up.

thanks! i do plan on rounding the neck edges on the back for sure!  haha!

Really nice box!!!   You might  want to think about rounding over the back side neck edges so it's easier on your hand.  Just a thought...  Keep going.  Looks great so far.

i think i have socks older than that too!  lol!

the neck is just sitting in there in the pics.  it's not permanently mounted.  i was going to carve out some of the neck to allow it to sit flush or a little higher than the surface of the box.  do you think it would be easier to carve the neck, or leave it and glue an additional piece on top of it to raise the fretboard ?

It's pretty close on size...I use the Red Oak 2"x2"x3' for my necks...Home Depot has them for around $6-$8 each...Just check em out close for straightness first or as close as you can get...Good Luck...Mike

Heath,  I carve mine out but if you want at least 1/2 to 3/4 thickness in the box area to keep it from bowing.

I like that box.  Enjoy your first build.
okay, so i've carved the neck to fit the box, drilled holes for the strings and tuners, and adapted a hinge for a bridge.  i just need to get a piezo for a pickup, a jack, tuning machines, and strings, then i'll be able to finish it up and play.  i think that's all....

a bit more progress...input jack plate made (not screwed down yet), volume pot mounted, neck carved down, headstock cut, bridge made from an old cabinet hinge. nothing is wired yet, but i'm getting closer! okay for a first time build. the next one will be better i'm sure!

more progress.

tuners in...

bridge and box detail...

roll pins in the holes so the strings don't cut into the wood...

crappy crooked jack plate!

strung up!

volume knob....

bolt nut!

it's not bad, but the action is kind of high.  i'm either going to have to get something different for the bridge or file the grooves a lot deeper into it.  i still have to wire the volume, pickup, and jack also.  everything on here was used except for the strings, some screws, and the wood for the neck.  i can definitely see things i will do different on the next one, but this isn't horrible for a first try.
