Beetlejuice, smojo is right about cutting out the reciever part ( I would cut it at the audio out ) then wire your jack there. at the volume , or cut the power somewhere past the resistor that is on the amp side. cut the power, ground and audio gain . I
I am posting a link to a page that shows pics and diagrams of radios like yours, check out the whole page and some of it will make sense. I hope this helps.

thanks smojo...that makes sense...i need to figure out how to get rid of the Radio" stage' and just bypass and add a jack to the amplifier stage..it is not important to keep the radio for me as It always seems to bleed thru a bit ...i'd rather get rid of it all together.
here is what i am working on today and for some reason It gives problems when I try to tap in at the volume...but if I by pass the volume knob it works????
why is that so???
I need advice!
i am a butcher and want to be a surgon...what am i doing wrong???
You're doing alright so far. I'm still learning too. As far as I can figure, a radio is made up of several "stages". The first stage tunes into the radio signal. That needs demodulating (changing the frequency down to something we can hear) and then the signal needs amplifying so we can shove it through a speaker. All we are interested in is the last stage. The radio signal hits the volume control before going into the amplifier stage so that's where we need to connect to. I guess for best results we should disconnect the wire that's coming from the previous stage so we don't get any radio breaking through. I need to experiment yet to be sure of this. But what I do realise is that if you turn on the radio and only hear a crackle and no radio station, it may just be the tuning stages that are not working but the amplifier is so don't assume it won't work for us. Try tapping onto the volume pot with your own guitar or signal generator signal.
thanks guys for all the leads on learning and books...i really would love to pinpoint just the parts that are needed on these old radios and remove them and make my own mini amps or just tap right directly into them ( I am the twinkle towes strummer...I just touch wires andramdomly waste time).....I have a closet full of broken radios that i know must still work somehow??? I will study...seems like alot to learn...but I will take it little buy little
Beetlejuice, My books were written by John E Lackey.I used them when I was learning to fix a bunch of old stuff that I couldn't get parts for so had to learn to substitute . They are well written, and very cheap on the internet. There are lots of them in hardback for less than $5.00.
try these.
Juice - here's an online electronics course worth looking at. Remember Rome wasn't built in a day. Don't get fazed by the amount of information. Just take one bite at a time and if you don't understand something try asking here for clarification. I'm not a total expert even though I've worked in telecoms all my life and have a good basic knowledge, I don't know much about radios but can probably answer most basic questions. Learning is fun if it's a subject you're interested in.
That's a nice one with the grille cloth and all. Nice grab.
This group is really cookin'!
Managed to get this one working as a guitar amp after many hours of fiddling, though a little quiet, radio volume doesn't affect it, i connected the earth to the chassis ad touched around the antenna feed and adjacent printed circuit board. Happily i found a loose wire and resoldered one or two joints and as a radio is working bettter than before!! (-:
