Hi all. I've not built anything in a while and not felt up to being overly active on CBN for a while now. I need to change that and get back in the saddle, as the saying goes.

Anyway, I have a question. My next build is a licence plate guitar with a 23" shorter scale length. Is there any such thing as a standard set of electric guitar strings for a short scale build? I believe 23" is around the standardised 3/4 size "normal" (or factory built) guitar but is there a 3/4 size guitar string set?

I've also forgotten whether shorter scale length means greater or less string tension when up to pitch. If someone could please edumacate me I'd appreciate it as I'll have to factor that into my build plans if it means greater tension.

Thanks in advance and happy new year to those of you that I've not had chance to say it to yet. I hope 2018 turns out to be your best year yet.

Bear :)

The short scale guitar using regular guitar strings will require a heavy gauge string set. Or you can get 3/4 scale guitar(child's guitar) strings(some come in colors). ;)

Thanks Paul. Always there with help for others. I appreciate your knowledge on the subject. I'll look for heavier gauge strings I think. I fancy a bit of a beefier tone anyway, even though the shorter scale length is known for  its higher pitch. The help is much appreciated! Thanks again :0)

Glad to help.

I got a 6 string double cut Tele to work on soon and it's 24.5" scale and will probably get some 11 or 12 gauge strings.

Also been lusting for a Fender 60's Jaguar 24" scale git. Can't afford one, but Sweetwater has been sending me emails about the Squier version for $300 and their financing. Say no  say no  say no  aw dang. LOL

Got to treat yourself ŕight once in a while, Paul. I vote buy the Squire version. It's just  $300 and you can justify it by telling yourself at least it's not the true Fender version Jaguar. Do iiìiìt!! Lol

If I could and sneak it by my wife, I would. LOL

Hey Paul the Squier VM Jaguars are good players and very good value, the build quality is good but the bridges can be problematic and a good setup out of the box will be called for.  I haven't been able to stretch the $$ to an AVRI Jag (much less a genuine 60's!) - I suggest looking out for a MIJ or CIJ 60's reissue. I have MIM Blacktop and a '66 RI CIJ Jaguar and the CIJ is a simply outstanding guitar in every way.  Neck profile is thinner than AVRI or MIM jags, with 7.25" fretboard and vintage frets it just plays like butta. Worth a look out.

They look like a great deal with Seymour Duncan pickups in them.

You mentioned the MIJ Jaguar, Have you seen the Thinline Jag they made? Awesome guitar. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kAOb8I9tDs

After seeing that video, I couldn't help but want one.

The bridge has a wobble effect and a lot of guys switch them out for a Fender Mustang bridge or get a Mastery Bridge.

I like heavier strings on short scale but try different stings you never know what might work on any given guitar.

Hi,

I am a newbie - but I am building to a similar scale and I am planning on using the string calculator that Rick mentions here:

http://www.cigarboxnation.com/profiles/blogs/4-tips-to-make-a-cbg-p...

It lets you type in a scale length and then you can adjust what you want to tune to and it will tell you the tension the string will be under.
