AGP #273 - ''Kangaroo Edward''

AGP #273 - “Kangaroo Edward’ - 3 String Dulcitar - Scale : 648mm / 25½inches - Strings: .021NW/.015PS/.009PS/ - Tuning: G/D/g/The Box Frame is recycled Treated Pine, the Box Back is 3mm Pine Plywood, the Fretboard, Headstock Wings and Tailpiece are recycled Cypress Pine, all with 2 coats of Tung Oil applied. The Top/Soundboard was cut from a full Kangaroo Rawhide I purchased at the beginning of my CBG Odyssey a few years ago, and has been Hoppin’ around in the cupboard ever since!, a bit thicker than the couple of Goat Skin builds I’ve previously done, but!, very happy with the result!A Piezo Disc is hot glued to the through neck, as is a 4.7K Delta Type Pickup situated just under the skin in the neck area, both are wired to a 3 Way Switch then to Output Jack.Built as a Long Scale, what I call a Dulcitar (but is known by many other names!!!) and wanted it tuned to GDg, but!, after a fair bit of searching, couldn’t find out much about recommended String Gauges, so went with the MPUSTC String Tension Calculator, as I do with most of my builds, and come up with .021NW=12.85kg/ .15PS=13.3kg / .011PS=12.63kg / the .011 broke on tuning as did a .010=10.3kg, and finally ended up with a .009=7.89kg which as yet is still intact!!

  • "Thanks Rob Uker", was originally going to be square but went with the triangular shape, as per a previous Dulcitar build - AGP #173

  • That looks awesome, and I've never seen anyone  build a triangular banjo here before.

  • "Thanks Jim Morris", We've got millions of 'em over here, sometimes when driving out West, you think there's more dead ones on the side of the road than there is in the Bush, you may have to do midnight raid on a Zoo ;-D

  • "Thanks Angry Rooster Guitars", Yep!, well worth a try, my original inspiration for this build came from, and was loosely based on a "Cigar Box Dulcijo" build, posted on the Nation a little while back by G.S.Monroe Folk Music.

  • "Thanks  Brent Briggs", not sure about the Backwoods, as I live on the Coast, but definitely a Flying V-ish Banjo look about it :-D

  • "Thanks Uncle John", Yep!, "Very Hoppy" with the look and playing feel with this one, the pic's actually hide a few blemishes and make it look a lot whiter than it actually is, and with the way your poor old back is at the moment, you may have a problem catching and caressing it.

Cheers and "Good Health" for the future.

  • "Thanks Erasmo Coco", Yes!, I too love the grain and colour of the Cypress Pine Fretboard and bits & pieces and love working with this wood.

  • "Thanks Jerry Jordan", I built a Goat Skin build a couple of years back with a Piezo Disc Pup, which I've never been all that happy with, very Boomy & Harsh, so I'm about to change it to a Mag Pup, thinking I might have had the same result with this build I also installed a Delta Style Mag Pup, BUT!, having done that, when switched to the Piezo on its own, it is by far the better sound !!!

  • Roos that is - not banjos.

  • I like it AGP. I'd like to try some roo skin on a banjo but they're pretty scarce round here.
