Thanks so much for the friend request. Where bouts in Ontario are you? Aside from South West Ontario, there is not too much of it I have not seen at one time or another.

  • Dave Lynas

Hey Reeds. Thanks for the friendship..... Dave
  • Dave Lynas

Hey Reeds, don't worry about ?s. That's what this site is all about. I've not changed out a full size archtop "set" neck. I've read a lot about it and wish i could gain that skill. Having a little steamer is a good thing and a hot artist's spatula will soften the hide glue the joint its glued with. Getting the steam down in the joint is tricky. You figure out exactly where the neck block and neck heal fit together and drill a little hole in the fretboard to insert the steamer wand into the hole down to the joint. While doing that, you work around the joint of the fretboard on the guitar top with the hot spatula. You can heat the spatula with a hot gun or flame. I also have a "quilting iron" to work on heating the fretboard. Use the spatula around the edges of the neck join and try to wiggle the neck to get it loose. Once off the guitar you just clean up the joint and slide the right neck replacement in and make shims to re set the neck at the best angle to work. Ebay often offers necks for the replacement. Best to use hide glue for the job. Stu mack may have a video of the job or you tube may have one. First, i'd just try wiggling the old neck. It may be loose already if you are very lucky... Good luck.... Dave

Hi Reeds thanks for the welcome message. I feel very at home here already. Joined a few groups. Working on my second CBG and planning future designs as well. And Happy New Year!

  • Joe Caruso

Reeds I can use your help. I tried the steel wool in the vinegar trick (used regular table vinegar), in a closed jar, and after a few months I had - steel wool in vinegar, just what I started with. Any idea what I may have been doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your help.
