Refarding "In the wake of Irene", you might be interested to know that the title of my film is a play on the title of King Crimson's second album, "In the wake of Poseidon". KInd of appropriate, given what the storm did to the proceedings!
Hi John. Thanks for the comment on my 12 bars vid. It took a week or so of practice to learn the new touch with the slide on my pinky. Good news is I enjoy playing my Fender guitar again and my wife is happier that I pick that one up again too. :)
It's certainly been useful and friendly in my first few hours, I'm based in Plaistow but get around a lot of areas of London playing and watching gigs, so hopefully get to meet some of the people here in person at some point.
Thankyou John!! I been tired and busy--not a great combo....the boogie was almost an improv..(it shows, raw take),,,,,cannot help goofing off....I raised the strings to play BeStillRoys teacup reso as a slider...now off to chores...
Hey John just to let you know Iv just put up a post on my blog about your new website and a link to it. If you dont want it up just tell me and ill take it down
Hi John, thanks for checking in... things are well, i've just been taking a break. I still have a workbench full of unfinished projects that i'm sure i'll find the motivation to work on sooner or later. This summer i put my efforts in other places, like throwing a 3-day music festival for my wife's 40th birthday. Sooo fun, it was awesome. Anyway, congrats on your new website... i checked it out and it looks real nice. Best wishes & happy building, -scott
hi john ,the strings you want a heavy gage ,dean marklys 12,s jass the adgbe ones tuned open g ,gdgbd ,al la kith richards ,if you look at his guitars a lot have that big e removed from the guitar gets in the way of open g .thanks for the comments .db.
Hi John, I came across something quite by accident a few weeks ago, I thought about you and getting the best sound from a box/bridge placement.
I just built another cigar box guitar, made it a 4 string, anyway I was appearently so concerned with the neck and scale length measurement that I kind of built it in reverse, kind of from the tuners on upward. Anyway, when it came time to look at bridge placement on the box, finding the center from nut to bridge based on the 12th fret slot, I had to place the bridge where it numerically figured out to be placed, which on the boxes 10-3/8" length put the saddle at 4-3/8" from the end of the box so that the 12th frets location is correct. It has two sound holes, it's a 24-1/2" scale, 21 frets and its tone is high compared to anything I have ever heard, also to get a good tone when strumming I have to use pick at edge of box, (by neck), or its very tinny sounding. I have changed strings twice and went back to standard ADg + ? ( i think G or A), don't remember, I think it should be an F# when in tune, anyway I now tend to think that bridge placement at a 1/4 to 1/2 the length of the box from end is about where it needs to be to give best tone unless your looking for a specific higher pitch tone. From now on I will determine where my bridge should be placed on box and then worry about scale lengths/string and overall neck lengths then make my adjustments from there.
Hey thanks for the message, Roadkill.... I won't be able to make the Skype chat tomorrow, but hope to make one of the next ones.... It'll be fun to connect face-to-face with some of the folks here on the Nation! BTW, I am hearing your music as I type this message - too funny!!!
Hi John, Thanks for comin' by my light-starved laboratory, it's gettin' tough to pay the power company these days. lol Hey, I been lookin' at your work here. Damn ! You sure got yourself a fine eye for design and detail man !!! That is some good sh... Stuff !
Thanks John for the friend request. So far on my first 2 builds there is problems to work out. I'm not to the point of beauty. I just want them to sound good. Usually my problems are with the nut and bridge. String height etc. I am retired now and the CBG bug has bitten...Peter
Thank you John for your continued support. This guitar has a crazy tone. Being made out of tin, it vibrates and rumles like an electric guitar...the Power without the Plug...LOL Enjoy. (I was going to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving but I guess across the pond...LOL) Regardless...Enjoy
I'm thinking that my grooves are to deep on my first 2 builds and that there is no consistency in my string height from bridge to nut. Now on my 3rd build am making an effort to combat this problem. Wondering what method you use. Once I get some good measurements ( nut groove depth, string height, and bridge string spacing, height) I will be able to achieve them. Can't figure out how to upload pics. My e-mail is peterclarke20@comcast.net if you email me I will send some pics of my work...Peter
Hi John, thanks for the friend request, gladly accepted! I just checked out your website and videos, the double neck guitar had me in awe! That's such a good idea, I might just have to 'steal' ...hmmm somehow that joke doesn't translate form Dutch to English... that idea. Thanks for the inspiration!
Im all new to this got my first build done. Would really like to know what kind of tools you use for your builds. Thank you if you could help me decide what I need to buy without over spending on b.s. tools. Howard Crider.
Remember that bow that snapped at Boxstock? It turned out to be a Emile A Ouchard (made in NY) and has an eye-watering insurance value. Any chance you could get in touch with my wife and talk bows? 01252 702446 or beep@pearsefamily.co.uk. I sure would appreciate it.
Hello John, You're the first friend I have ever had from across the pond. It's cool to see that the CBG craze is so big over there. Also I checked out your website it looks great. You're a very skilled photographer, keep up the good work. Take care, Paul.
Thank you John. Considering how adventurerous you are feeling, you can try to arrange this song using the GDgb tuning too. Use the movable chord method on the Dgb (513) strings and find the melody line. Nothing like some good exploration to train your ear and help discover the hidden code of the fingerboard. Happy Holidays. Enjoy
Interesting. So there is a European version of Away In A Manger? I am not surprised. So, why not arrange the version that is familiar to you? As for being late for the season, that is not a problem because there is always next year, and more importantly for now, it is a good musical exercise. Enjoy, Keni Lee
Yes, that is certainly different. Actually it seems a little more difficult because the melody line is not so easily defined. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy.
Great question, but basically you answered it yourself. LOL Yes, if it sounds good having the higher and lower parts, they will add variation and interest. In open tuning, arranging in the tuning key is usually easiest, but also arranging in the fifth tone, works out well too. Key of G 3 chords (G,C,D) Key of the fifth is D (D, G, A). To get the A, bar across the second fret. having the G (4th tone) open makes for some interesting arranging. This is a good Blue player's secret. Happy Holidays. Enjoy.
