Thats awesome elmar!
try a booster pedal and you will get a louder signal..it will help you get the volume similar to a small amp.
If it's the original pot maybe you should replace that too.
After a couple of more test flights I've discovered that the Silvertone has great potential. I can make it sound fantastic. Just like some live recordings of Lightenin' Hopkins I love. The problem is that it takes some wiggling of the volume and some screeching to get there. Does this mean there is a short some where? Any suggestions for getting it to sound great all of the time? Again, wiggling the volume pot is how I eventually get there. When I do it is fantastic!
So here is a old tube radio. The Silvertone! Like BeetleJuice suggested I did not try to strictly hack it. Too much electricity and not enough volume. Nick, from what I have read that is the main problem with trying to convert tube radios. I kept the original speaker but replace the electronics with a Honeytone. Now it it is nice and loud and sounds pretty cool. A bit crackily when you crank it. Any ideas about how to deal with the jarring cracks when you turn it on? Am I suppose to ground it somehow?
Anyhow getting it to work as an amp has been lots of fun and I think the Honeytone electronics with the original speaker and big, hollow metal body sounds pretty good. I'll have to make a sound clip!
Has anyone tried with an old tube radio yet? if so how does it sound??
PapaSimone..... Those little thin wires wound around the ferite AM antennae....I knew that would prevent the AM from picking up a signal. I guessed right the first time when I unsoldered the red wire from the board and didn't hear a peep from the radio. I let the other wires be. I just wish the radio had a little more volume.
Thanks for the pictures Corbie. Great idea about the radio. How did you know which was the AM radio?
