I just finished making my self a dandy little pick up winder that I made with a $ 9 sewing machine,it has a foot speed pedal to boot every thing works well.My question to you guys is this, does it matter in what direction you wind the wire onto the bobbin or must it be clockwise or anti clockwise. This little bit of knowledge is holding me up.Any help will be appreciated. Thanks guys you rock.

Sorry I don't have an answer for you on direction for winding pickups. But I would love to see some pics of your winder. Also what is you solution for counting the revolutions? Nice builds btw. Jim
Byron: I don't know the electronics, but if the coil is symmetrical can't just turn it upside down to switch the winding direction? Dale
It doesn't matter which direction you wind it, but reversing the winding on a pickup will merely reverse the phase of the pickup.

Use whatever direction suits your setup best.

AS for counting I have an old tape recorder that has a build in counter I was thinking about glueing it to the out side and then attaching a rubber band to thew base of the winder to the cog of the counter and it should work, that or as the old saying goes when it's full it should be enough.

In all my travels I have never seen a sewing machine like that. As far as the direction goes I don't know either. But I bet it does not matter untill you have two on your instrument. Nice job on the bobbin.

Cheers
Bob:)

Nice setup, I want one of those sewing machines...nice n compact...
The winding direction doesn't matter at all, but when you hook up your lead wires the conventional wisdom is to wire the START as earth (ground), and the FINISH as hot. This way if the magnets corrode at all and short the windings, they can only become earthed, not hot. If the magnets become connected to the hot end of the winding they will generate noise if you touch them, like when you touch the tip of a guitar lead which is plugged into an amp.

Looks like a fine winder.
