AS for counting I have an old tape recorder that has a build in counter I was thinking about glueing it to the out side and then attaching a rubber band to thew base of the winder to the cog of the counter and it should work, that or as the old saying goes when it's full it should be enough.Sorry I don't have an answer for you on direction for winding pickups. But I would love to see some pics of your winder. Also what is you solution for counting the revolutions? Nice builds btw. Jim

The winding direction doesn't matter at all, but when you hook up your lead wires the conventional wisdom is to wire the START as earth (ground), and the FINISH as hot. This way if corrode at all and short the windings, they can only become earthed, not hot. If the magnets become connected to the hot end of the winding they will generate noise if you touch them, like when you touch the tip of a guitar lead which is plugged into an amp.
Looks like a fine winder.
cheers
