The box for the OM came from 'The Humidor' in Dothan, Al. The neck has no joint. I drew a profile that included the headstock and the heel, with an extension that goes inside the box about 2 3/4 inches. I glued additional pieces to the sides of the extension to give me more surface area for the purpose of glueing it to the bottom of the box. So far, so good. Here is a photo of the extension with the 'wings' added.

Ronnie, very impressive. Loved the video and the build. Where did you find the box? Very cool.

Ronnie,

Great looking and sounding octave! What kind of neck joint did you use on that?

Here is an octave that I recently completed:

Hey has anyone used a real mandolin neck?

Hi folks, It's good to find some cigar box mando players. Shuffle blues is my specialty. I am nearly mediocre! I have built 3 and stupidly sold the best one. My two remaining 4 stringers look good and play fair, but lack volume. Questions: What would the 14 inch scale mando sound like with octave mando strings? Is there a place to buy an 8 string bolt on neck?

There are some beautiful Mandolins in this group. Wow. I'd really like to build an Octave Mandolin. I've got about 6 or 7 what I call "Chunky Boxes". They're almost square, like 7 ¼ x 7 x 2 ¾ and 8 x 7 ½ x 3. What's the best use for these? I'm just open to suggestions, I know about 'anything goes' and think that's a very cool concept. Just looking for a little direction.

Do y'all use 2 parallel braces under the top like a regular mando? I built a 4 stringer with no brace (holdin' up good) but an 8 stringer probably needs the braces, huh?

My bolt-on neck is holding perfectly; I used a "furniture insert" and a bolt. Furniture inserts are a brass cylinder with a coarse, wood-screw thread on the outside and a fine machine-screw thread on the inside. They are also relieved a bit for an allen wrench.
You drill an appropriate-sized hole, screw the insert in with the allen wrench, and then use the bolt to secure the neck to the body.
You can also use "hanger bolts", those are the ones with a wood-screw thread on one end and a machine-screw thread on the other.
I used those on my uke, and also on the tenor guitar I'm presently building.
They're not quite as strong; I used two.
