Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia. I'm a bit of a lurker, as I've been reading and reading for a while,…Continue

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

Hello CB builders, and greetings from Kentucky Mojo (Ky Mojo). I'm Kenny Wayne (builder). I started building cigar box instruments 3 years ago. I prefer to build ukuleles because , as a musician and long time guitar player, I find the size and scale to be proportionate to what I am used to. The 3 and 4 stringers are not my style because it's not easy to play along with other instruments, and require special tuning and equipment (slides). I like to jam with other musicians in a free style form, and I love being able to transpose the chords they play on the fly...which the ukulele allows me to do rather easily. I build mostly from antique and vintage boxes, and each one is unique and different from the next. I like to get a vision of the final product from the artwork on the box itself. It's very important to me that the artwork remains the star of the show, and the instrument is completely playable (and not just a wall hanger). I have worked on my own design and support system within the box that gives it great volume, tone and sustain. Less is more!

Welcome Richard. Always great to learn something new.
Hello to everyone, I am new to CBG, I am a gigging musician from Swansea, South Wales, UK, I have been gigging with a local ukulele band that I started 5 years ago and we are going from strength to strength, I have also been playing harmonica for about 3 years and I gradually got into the blues, I have tried to achieve the delta blues sound on my uke, and it works to a degree, but for the authentic sound I realised I needed a Cigar Box Guitar, so here I am witng for my new Cigar Box to arrive, at this moment in time I have no interest in building a cbg but hey, who knows in the future, look forward to taking part and learning from you guys, ATB Richie
Welcome Jim, there are good tabs for songs here on site to learn from.
Hi, folks.
This is Jim, calling in from North Central Idaho, USA - at the western foothills of the Continental Divide.
I love music, but, my various efforts at learning to play any kind of instrument have been pretty dismal. I can get an interesting assortment of sounds out of almost anything -- just not much music. :(
The good news is: I like to make things! And, I've had some fair success at that, over the years. So, I'm collecting pieces and hope to have my version of "CBG No. 01" in the book pretty soon.
Then, I'll have to find someone to play it for me... :)
This CBN really is a great resource. My thanks to Shane and all of you!
Welcome, Thomas! I look forward to hearing what you put together.
This is a great community. Enjoy!
Greetings, all! I'm brand-spanking new to the CBG scene and have neither played nor built one. I was originally trained on violin and play "strings in general" (my most recent passion was mandolin), and look forward to learning this one. Having a deep appreciation for blues, I started exploring the cigar box, have recently ordered my first and plan on building my own after that.
Welcome Bobby and Joel. Nice looking CBG's you guys have made.
Hey all. Glad to be a part of the Nation. I am fairly new to CBGs, but I am hooked. I am about to start my 3rd build. Slowly getting parts in. On this one I am going to wait until I get everything in before doing anything. I discovered how frustrating it is to have a partially built guitar sitting around while waiting. It has been, and continues to be a learning process. The photos are of my first two. Again, glad to be here.
