Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia. I'm a bit of a lurker, as I've been reading and reading for a while,…Continue

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

hi, i am Dan ! i always seem to have a project on the go, anything from boats to custom golf carts ... these days it seems i am going to make a couple of cigar box guitars , maybe more if i like how they turn out . i am a huge music fan with more than 12k songs in my library listening to these instruments lately has made me want to make one ...
Welcome Jeff from Australia. Good job on the travel git conversion. As a carpenter it looks like you have the skills and the tools to make some very nice instruments. Keep working at the playing - it will come!
Truly addicted Rick ;)
I joined this site last year, and have made a few friends. I got into CBG's about 8 or 9 years ago, then became readdicted last fall after seeing that video of that kid playing Kashmir on a 3 string. I realized that even my best git was not very good after trying to learn a few songs. So, I've built 13 CBG's since last winter, and just recently, a 2 string upright bass. I'm shifting my focus away from building, and more towards learning and playing for the moment, but that can change at any moment.
Welcome Tim. The string height can be a biggie, especially if your trying to fret and play slide. Keep on it and you'll get there.
I set mine at 3/32nds" to 1/8th" between the strings and the first fret for slide and fretted play, and around 1/16ths" for fretted play only. Slide only around 3/16ths" to 1/4". But everybody's different.
New member from Upstate NY. I play a number of instruments and started building a few of my own. Somehow I stumbled on this site and was hooked on CBG's. My wife thought I was a bit crazy until she heard me plug my first one into my amp. Now I just have to find the sweet spot for string height. I love this site, it is so full of information!
Welcome Doug. Have you tried playing slide?
I retired 15 years ago and have kept myself busy trying to play a uke or dulcimer. Broke my wrist and can't get my fingers around the neck , so gave up trying make music. Have recently found cbg's and am enjoying building. On my 6th one and they are beginning to look decent. Live in Apache Junction AZ. and have an outbuilding converted to an insulated, ac equipt workshop. Happy building
Al - Ah haw haw haw.
Good idea Dave.
Paul, Al I solved the wife problem by building my first FOR her. It worked.
