Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia. I'm a bit of a lurker, as I've been reading and reading for a while,…Continue

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

Welcome Steve.
Welcome Jeff. I too used to make furniture and now I look at it as nothing more, or less, than a good foundation for making instruments.
Welcome JD. We are all happy to help if needed.

Hello All,
My name is JD Richardson from Bonne Terre, MO. I joined about a week ago. Really interested CBG's. Got my first on the bench right now. You guys have a lot of great information. Cool not only to learn how to build and play but the history behind these great instruments. Thanks for letting be a part of the group.
Welcome Larry and Tim.
Evenin' all! I'm a late middle-aged bloke from the UK, with a passion for music. I've been talentlessly strumming guitars for decades, and still can't manage a 3-chord song without messing it up somewhere along the way! I was really intimidated by all the guitar heroes on YouTube, and rated myself very poorly in comparison.
I found the CBG phenomenon a year or so ago, and being a life-long model maker, soon had a simple 3-string CGB up and running. I attended one of Chickenbone John's excellent seminars, but just couldn't get the hang of the thing.
Step two saw me making a 6-string CBG, so I could carry on playing my familiar chord shapes. This is my most used guitar, and even features an adhustable truss rod in the idigbo neck.
Then I discovered ukuleles, and everything changed! The chords were simple, and there were several clubs in my area. Obviously I had a build my own (having had a bit of a bash of a simple kit from Ebay).
Uke 1. Made from a painted wooden box I found on Ebay, I added a tenor mahogany neck. Plays well, but the thick soundboard makes it too quiet for club use.
Uke 2. A tenor banjolele, using a cheap tambourine as a pot, with a through-neck form idigbo wood. Loud. Sometimes too loud!
Uke 3 . Another tenor uke, but with the body built from parts of an old, scrapped acoustic guitar. So, nice curvy sides, with a thin ply top. Sounds a bit like a lute. Nice.
Uke 4? Considering doing a 8-stringer, so watch this space!
Tim
