I use the 1st (high) E string and tune down to D. Then I use a 2nd string B dropped down to A and a 4th string D as the low D string.
With my standard disclamer: I don't want to hijack any thread, but have another question.

I'd like to use the top (that is, lowest sounding) D string as occasional melody string. My setup now has a wound string there, and it squeeeeeeeeks when I slide from one note to another.

The setup is: .010, .014, .023 These are all banjo strings, I think. Bill, that might be a good combination. It is the set sent with McNally Strumsticks (Gdg, DAd, CGd.)

Does anyone know of a string which is NOT wound which I can use instead of the .023 banjo. Or another set of strings which Bill or I could use for DAd tuning.
JustStrings.com has a house line of single strings, and they have a plain steel . 022, .024 and .026. At about $1 per string, you could try them all!

Thanks, Diane.

Bill, I just bought 3 sets of strings for about 12-dollars, just by buying single strings. I went for the solid steel .o24 to replace my .023 wound strings for my CBG. Good source. Bob's right though. If you have guitar strings, use what you have.
I ask the same question a couple of weeks ago and was advised that the "E","B" and D string would work for DAD tuning. I tried it and it works great I think.
