The simplest little resonator instrument of all. Please add links to plans, photos of your canjos and ideas you've found that make the most of this diminutive instrument. (The image is a temporary placeholder, I'll replace it any day now!)

So I've made a few of this tin can banjo things. Having a blast playing on them. I've made a couple out of empty tin "soup" cans and one out of a beer can. I cut a few other cans to prepare them to…Continue

The new style beer cans dont resonat very well at all. They still work but the sound is muted down quite a bit unless you put a pickup under one. They are just a diffrent can that looks neat and some people like just because they are diffrent.
A very big thanx to all members of this group who offered their help to me,
it is very much appreciated!!! I've got my template layed out & jus' need wood
for my next CanJo project.
Hi All.
It's good to see all the activity in the Can Jo Consortium discussion group. I like those "new style" beer cans you've been using for resonators. Do they resonate as well as the old aluminum "coke" cans? I might try my hand at one if I can find a can here in China. The tapered neck looks like it might be easier to play. One objection to canjos is that they are a bit hard to hold. In one of my builds I used a tail extender board tailored to extend the end of the canjo neck into the crook of my arm (opposite side of my elbow). It was attached with a single bolt so it cold flex a bit and that worked out pretty well.
To help answer BrianQ's questions on diatonic fret placement, be aware that the diatonic scale is a subset of the chromatic scale, so if you have a chromatic fret template that you like (scale length, etc), then it's just a matter of skipping the unused frets. These are detailed in the following diagram:
These fret calculators always carry the calculations out to three decimal places, but in practice, if you measure and cut them to the nearest 0.1 it will be close enough. So, don't sweat it if you are a little off when measuring and cutting your frets. It will still sound good.
Well, happy canjo crafting...

I've been using a number seven piano wire. Got a deal on a roll of it & havent ran out of it yet. Use whatever size or guage that you like there are no wrongs as it is builders prefrence. You could use a leather loop or put a snap instead for a belt clip anything to hold the can end up at a comfortable playing heighth. Good luck & happy playing.
Cook, Love da Belt Hook!!!! Dat's Awesome!!!!!
Great alternative to a strap!
Big Thanx to Thomas & Corbie for those conversion charts,
it really put it into perspective for me, now I get it!
I've gotta get dat hard-headed american we don't need no
