Hi Mal,

Saw your post and i'm sorta in the same position as you except i'm learning to play on a 'conventional'  6 string electro-acoustic...but to complicate matters i'm a 'south-paw' !

So anything you find just let me know.............. or is there going to be a novices session at BoxStock ?

Hi Ian,

(Sorry Mal so far I only play 6 string or 4 string tuned DGBe like 4 from a six string so haven't commented previously)

Regarding playing a six string I found this site excellent http://www.justinguitar.com/ especially the video lessons http://www.justinguitar.com/en/AA-000-LessonIndex.php scroll right down to the songs part of the index and pick one you like.

Also for chords or tabs to most songs this is a great website http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ type in the song you want and away you go.

Youtube is also a good resource and if you type in a song title followed by "guitar" or "guitar lesson" often there is a video to look at.

Ian as a south paw are you learning left or right handed (as per which hand do you fret with?) - Many music teacher now teach all kids to fret with the left hand  the thought being the left handers may well have an advantage as they will have better dexterity for fast chord changes.  Saying that my guitar teacher is half my age, a superb player and a south paw.  The downside he finds is the premium loaded onto the cost of left handed instruments.

Are you able to read music? I don't and have found guitar tabs easy to follow (if you don't know about them just google).

Good luck with the playing,

David

Hi Mal,

I just had a look around as I  remembered this (By LJ) being a good intro to 3 string guitar playing http://handmademusic.ning.com/forum/topics/ljs-cbg-playing-lessons-for

If I come across any others I'll post a link here.

Regards,

David

Hi there Mal. As you are in Hull and want to learn, I am in Lincoln and can at least get you started. I often play at open mic sessions and the like. So, if you'd like to arrange a get together in t'near future, let me know........

Thanks Mate it won't be for a while though as my wife has a new knee fitted this coming week and will need looking after for a couple of months,do you do your own electrics on your guitars as at this minute I am makind one with a magnetic pick up and havn't the slightest idea how to fit it Mal

Hi Mal,

Keni lee Burgess is a CBN member and often answers questions on alternate tunings - very knowledgeable and helpful.

He sells lessons on video CDs and has a youtube page.

Example of a lesson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMdRMFN_5Ck

His Youtube page http://www.youtube.com/user/KeniLeeBurgess#g/u

He would be a good person to ask where would be a good place to start - his CBN page is here http://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/KeniLeeBurgess?xg_source=prof...

Here is one of the videoCDs he has for sale if the youtube videos wets your appetite. http://cgi.ebay.com/Cigar-Box-Guitar-Video-Lessons-Blues-Keni-Lee-C...

I hope all goes well with your wife's knee op - you need to get build number 2 done so she can play along with you whilst she recovers ;O)

If you are still having problems with the magnetic pickup add another post to the one you did in in CBG wiring and electronics  - Did you get chance to look at the links to diagrams I added and if so what part of them are you having problems with?

Regards,

David
