UPDATE ON UK CBG FEST 2010

OK guys and gals....I'm STILL getting my head organising round this years event..but it's all coming together nicely.

The staff at The Public are being very helpful in terms of press releases, laying on the PA, lighting and video stuff  - I've just been down to do a photo shoot with the local press.

LATEST NEWS
We've got Roosterman doing his "How to Build a Cigar Box Guitar" workshop, demonstrating all the stages you'll need to know about.

Cigar Box Guitar kits and parts will be available on the day, so you can pick up your supplies and get building. I'll be finalising costs on this shortly, so do bring a bit of pocket money.

I will be doing a trouble shooting workshop, so if you've got any woes regarding fretting, finishes, electrics...pretty much anything CBG related, I'll be there to try and help you sort it out.

Guitars will be available to buy on the day - if you want to exhibit your wares, let me know and I'll sort out a space for you (it free). If you are thinking of buying something, do bear in mind that most builders will only be accepting CASH..so either put a little extra folding in your wallet, or be prepared to pop out for 5 minutes to the cashpoint.

Shane Speal's & Max Shore's film "Songs Inside The Box" will be shown - it's first UK public screening.

On the Friday evening  we will be setting up at the venue, and then it's off for a drink and a bite to eat. If anyone wants to join us, either to bring in your gear to the venue or join in the night out, give me a shout.

On Sunday afternoon, my band Chickenbone Blues will be playing at the same venue, so if you are haven't gone home by then, why not take it easy, stop by for lunch and the gig?

Any suggestions, requests or problems -  do let me know.  This is a grassroots event, so I'm open to accommodating fresh ideas...just get in touch.

Prices are the same as last year- £25.00 full ticket, £5.00 evening ticket. Concession tickets for students and JobSeekers are available at £15.00 and £3.00, and I also have a very limited offer of concession all-day ticket and hotel accommodation for the Saturday night at only £20.00 - message me direct about both these deals.

The Cigar Box Nation group numbers are well up on last year (just coming up to the 200 compared to 80+ last year), so I'm anticipating a bigger turnout, but not so big as it will change the nature and vibe of the event - I still want to keep it intimate, lively....and above all FUN.

Looking forward to what you've got to pitch in....and see you on the day.

Regards

Mr Chickenbone

Is anybody else travelling from the Manchester area can share petrol costs. I managed to scrounge up the cost of the ticket but can't afford to travel on my own.
Totally brassed off that I could not make it this year, especially when I just found out I had enough bloody airmiles stashed away (that I forgot about) to have got over !!!!!
On the positive front Carrot Crunching CBGs USA will be in operation very shortly - after having to purchase all new power tools due to the 115v issue, finding a source for wood and various other bits - just need a decent work bench and away we go.

Weather here - wish you were beautiful

Sorry Kev, I was down all day, if I had known Friday night, I could have arranged to collect you. I travelled down from Warrington at about 8.30AM.

Good to have met you on the night fella, glad you liked the fretless tin box I made.
Made me feel good to see someone twiddle with it.

It was a great day! Nice to meet loads of people I have been chatting with. Even got up and did some numbers on the open mic! Thanks for a great fest Chickenbone and all those involved.
A VERY BIG thank you for everyone who supported this year's UK Cigar Box Guitar Festival...players, helpers, venue staff and everyone who came along on the day and the evening...I'm amazed at how an internet group has become a proper living social community...well done to everyone involved, it wouldn't have happened without you.
Well, I only missed last year by a whisker so I had to wait patiently for this year. Now I've missed it too because I just couldn't scrape together enough cash for the ticket, accommodation and travel in time. If anyone had've been able to give a lift then I would have been there, or if there was somewhere to pitch a tent or whever then that would have done.
Sorry I'm feeling really depressed now guys cos there's nobody into CBGs around my neck of the woods as far as I know and I really cannot wait another year. Does anyone know of any other CBG event coming up soon please ? Hopefully not quite so far away ?
The only comment I can make on pricing is that the CBG started out as a poor man's instrument and, to those of us who are unemployed, it still is.
While £25 for a ticket, the same again for accomodation, and then double it for travelling might not seem like much to someone with a job, when you are unemployed it truely is a fortune. Perhaps if there was some kind of opportunity for some of us to 'earn our keep' or 'sing for our supper' at the event ? I would have done almost anything to have been there - I really wanted to be at the inaugeral event and desperately wanted to be with you all this time, but the meagre funds from a couple of emergency e-bay sales came through too late.
I announced concession price tickets AND the concession price ticket/hotel room deal over a month before the event. If I recall correctly, I posted it on the site in a couple of places and also messaged the whole Brits group. It was £20 for a room and ticket - to get a (shared) hotel room and a ticket would have been at least £50.00, so I reckon less than half price was a pretty good deal.

Other people took advantage of the concession price deals, and other people payed the full whack, I hope nobody felt short-changed or feel hard done by...but I can only do so much to ensure that as many people as possible get to the event.

The ticket prices were the same as last year, but if anyone can figure out to how to hire a venue like that, complete with tech assistance, porters etc, hire a top notch (and effing huge) PA system & sound engineer, set-up a full professional stage, pay for hotel rooms for performers, subsidise concession tickets, arrange to collect and drop-off performers from the airport, arrange press photo shoots, radio interviews, technical meetings with the venue....and on top of all that PAY three headline performers..., yes, if you can do that for less than £25 a pop, you're a better man than I am Gunga Din..to quote Kipling. And all this is valuing my time at zero, nothing, zilch....I don't aim to make a profit, I call on LOADS of favours to make this event happen, and by the time I do the accounts, if it ends up a few quid in the black, it probably works out at about 10p an hour for the time I put in....sorry, rant over.

Anyway, I hope everyone had a good day, my sympathies and commiserations to those who couldn't make it for any reason...even though I say so myself, I reckon you missed a pretty decent day...let me know if by any chance you want this to happen again.

So much to comment on. First a huge thanks to John for all his hard work. This was my dream when I first really got into this stuff (that we could have a UK event) and now it's a reality. Thanks also for the opportunity to overcome my stage nerves and play in front of an audience. I truly felt I was amongst friends and appreciated your support. Nice to meet some old and new friends. My apologies if I didn't immediately remember who you were! I have some work to do now trawling through the group and trying to identify a few people and maybe send a few personal messages when I find them.

One suggestion John - we need more!!!! How about another one in Spring? OK you need a lie down for a while :) Love the photo of Hollowbelly in your 60s pod chair.

I'd like to say a big hi to the young folk and the ladies that came. Nice to see a few more even though I didn't get to chat to you all. I know we seem to be mainly middle aged blokes but don't let that put you off ha. It would be great to see more of you in here so spread the word to your mates and help keep the spirit of "real people" music alive. Don't let the generation gap get in the way. We are all the same inside. We are like you but built into ratrod bodies!!

Oh and Roosterman Ben. You are a truly great character. Naturally funny and a real asset to the whole thing.
It was a brilliant day! Why do we have to wait a whole year to get toghether again? Why not have a Christmas party?
