I think he slotted the neck so that the soundboard lid slides in like a tongue. Then dropped it into the box frame. The outside screw would fasten the bottom lid to the frame; the inside screw to the interior neck piece. I would have also used glue.
Is that a good way to do it? Or does it put a lot of presure on the soundboard?
He may have done what I do and that's extend the neck inside all the way to the back frame piece, where it's glued and fastened. That puts most pressure on the frame. If the neck seems solidly connected, he probably did something like that.
I see no reason for gluing the neck. I screw mine from the top with countersunk drywall screws. The neck goes all the way through to the back and is firmly fastened by the tailpiece screws. Screw #3 goes into a scrap of wood that extends to the bottom, it has been glued in. I also like to use these corner braces, which again screws into a glued scrap. I's very solid and can be opened for any maintenance.
Beautiful work Gus. As far as glues or screws, to each his own.
Are you cutting out a piece of the neck so it fits in the box? Or just the notch to fit it on the cover?
LOL.. I just should have stuck to building computers.
Yes. In my case I first notched the neck so it sits flush with the top (just a couple of hairs higher). Then I added a fretboard with some overhang.. For yours it looks like he actually had to cut a notch into the one piece neck.
I like that headstock Duck...Looks like a nice build overall too.
Thanks Brian, It was done as a "beater" that I could just throw in the back seat when we went places. It's a Partagas "Gigante" box (fiberboard), the neck is a cheap white pine 1x2 with an Oak fingerboard, fretless and done with some leftover stain I had laying around the shop. I have a double piezo pickup in the bridge and it sounds good acoustically or amplified. The volume knob was made from a Nesquick chocolate milk bottle cap.
