Hi all. Thought it would be nice to check in here if you're British. I know there's quite afew CBGers in the UK now because I've had quite a few emails from my blog. Time to come out of the woodwork and introduce yourself. How long have you been into CBGs? What got you started? What part of the UK do you live in? Do you know of any UK CBG events?

I'll kick it off. I'm David Ward (aka smojo) and live in West Yorkshire. Got into CBGs when I saw one on Ebay and bought it about 3 years ago. Started building and playing them. I have a blog going at

http://smojo-cigar-box-guitars.blogspot.com/ (sorry the hyperlink function doesn't seem to work)

Don't know of any events here yet but it would be cool if we could get one going sometime.

I hadn't thought of that Barrie. A really interesting point. I reckon there's a book in there somewhere - the socio-political implications of the Cigar Box Guitar. That would be fascinating.
ps. I was only joking with the northerner stuff. I'm a southerner and I'm soft as shite.

There has been a long standing history of black music in the north esp around wigan with it being the place for northen soul in the past. It has been put down to it being a deprived area in the past with the people involved in the music being able to indentify with the music from another poor area.

i am very northen though, i love slappies and babys eds from chippy. (quite a wigan thing). One of me fav days out is to buy bury black pudding from the market there then off to watch wigan rugby :-)
hello smojo,my name is darren fry(darf). i live in hertfordshire. i got in to cbg when i saw one in guitar magazine. soon as i saw it i had to build one. am best mates with jasus,i just supplied him with some necks cut from an old draining board. anyway,am on my third build and will get some pics on soon.
Hi Darren, good to hear from you, welcome. Look forward to seeing some of your pics.

David (smojo)
hey guys ,,,my name is jamie,,,,im 37 born in london lived a few different places ,,presently in kent...played guitar for years...was in a band called candyskulls untill recently...am part owner of a rehersal/recording studio..and work as a househusband or stay at home dad ....always wanted to build my own guitar but thought it would be too hard..so when i found out about cbgs i instantly joined the revalution,,,,ive so far built 3 and am busy building more ,,,im hooked
Hi Jamie - you got some nice guitars. What did you make the bridge on the dulcimer from? I'm thinking of making a solid body electric dulcimer, I've seen a guy playing one on Youtube - really cool sounds.
hi Smojo,

I thought I'd get into the group coz im british!!!. I'm called nick and i live in Newcastle. being 14 years old i havent developed that ganrly blues voice, but i figured punching my throat would solve that.
I got into CBGs when I saw a workshop in 'Guitar and bass' magazine about building one. I love blues and am already an accomplished blues guitarist and front a blues trio ( www.youtube.com/thevodkashots ).
I also use my CBGs to busk with in my local shopping arcade. Just gotta make sure you run when the coppers come round the corner!!

Well, I've made myself known and really enjoy looking at other peoples creations. So i tip my hat to everyone on this site.

Hi Folks, Just signed up, almost entirely due to discovering Hollowbelly by accident on YouTube.I'm 49,live in Newcastle and been in and out of bands for too many years, mostly as a singer. Can't explain it, but the cbg thing seems to sit far more easily with my aging punk ethic than most other music.I'm after one on e-bay at the minute, so don't any of you guys bump up the price!! If I manage to aquire it, I'll let you know how it goes.
Hi David and Nick
Glad to have you both onboard with us - Both Newcastle lads Too must be somthing in the air up north , there seems to be a lot of CBG players up there .

you come to the right place anyway - if you need to know anything just ask anybody ,thats how we all learn around here

Hope you have a good ride on here

juju.
Welcome from me too. Nick you sound like you're well on your way to the crossroads, I can't believe you are only 14. You'll need to drink heavy, smoke plenty and do so heavy womanising to get that Howlin Wolf type voice. You'll probably get your throat punched in for free too if you go down that route. Not to be recommended really. Ha :)
Hey, another Brit on board :o) Possibly the most northerly CBG player here too - Im way up in Inverness in the Scottish highlands (though Im a yorkshire man really).
Just got my grubby paws on my first CBG and Im just starting in on building my next one... Id love a resonator but 6" cones etc are a small fortune over here - Im gonna try and make one out of a VW hub cap and a caulender - any thoughts?
Nice to see Hollowbelly on here - I just 'discovered' you on youtube the other night! :o)
Take it easy
Welcome Randy. The VW cap would look cool but I doubt if it will actually work as a resonator. The cones in a reso are very fine spun aluminium so thinness and lightness allows them to vibrate easily. Go for it though, it'll look great.

It's good to know i'm not the only person into cbgs up here. Where do you guys get boxes? I had to use a Quality street tin for my first build(a 3 string lap steel) as i couldnt find any.
