Hi Seth. Regarding "Tin Pan Alley": I cut the neck from a semi-rough 1x6 piece of hickory that a friend gave to me. The thickness of the wood was just shy of a full 1". The finished neck is approximately 7/8" thick and just shy of 1 7/8" wide. I didn't add a fingerboard. The hickory is plenty strong enough to handle the tension of five strings. Actually the wider neck is more comfortable for me. I finished it with linseed oil to make it look aged and then Danish oil after the linseed cured.
