Thanks for your comment on To Love Somebody. You might like to know that I listened to your version on youtube just before I did mine. I was wondering if anyone had done it on 3 string CB guitar. Your 6 string sounds great and your voice is wonderful. Lots of helpful and supportive folks here at CB Nation. Keep on pickin.

  • bemuzic

Hi Letha, thanks...mmm I just can't work out why there are so few of us?

  • bemuzic

you did a soundtrack for your book, what a great idea, impressive!! Is it a novel?

  • Uncle John

Thanks, Letha.  Yes I build my guitars.   They may not be the purtiest, but they play well.

  • Ron "Oily" Sprague

Woo Hoo! We gotcha! No vid necessary, make a recording, upload it to the TVZ Discussion. I've already recorded If I Needed You, but feel free to do your version; I'm trying to make this as open and easy for everyone as possible. I don't remember if anyone has done Rex's Blues, No Place To Fall, Be Here To Love Me - there's loads of choices. Please read through the thread to see what's been submitted already. Only real requirement is to use a CBG somewhere on the recording, and make the song your own. Personally, I'd like to hear a woman's take on Kathleen, or (S)He Came And (S)He Touched Me, but pick something that really speaks to you. Thank you so very much for agreeing to do this!
  • Ron "Oily" Sprague

    Letha,

Are you talking about The Weight, as recorded by Levon Helm and The Band? One of my fave songs of all time! Only problem is, if that's the one, is that we are only doing TVZ - written songs ( with the exception of Two Hands) on the tribute album. But I'll be happy to give it a listen. As far as recording goes, you can make it plain and simple, or lush and "overproduced," however it sounds good to you, many tracks and overdubs as you want.
  • Vinylhed

Wow, I love your version of The Weight! You have have such an amazingly soulful voice, I could listen you sing for hours. I'm so pleased to hear you might be joining us boys on the Townes Van Zandt project, it needs a woman's touch.

  • Mr.C

Im guessing you play some irish and civil war tunes.
  • Ron "Oily" Sprague

    Letha,

Woo Hoo! Someone else recorded Tecumseh Valley for the TVZ tribute (hafta look up who), but their recording is really rough, the sound quality is not what it could be, and it can't be improved much with software tweaking. I prefer your version. Can you upload it to the TVZ Discussion as an mp3? There's a link that appears at the bottom left called Upload Files, once you Reply to another Reply in the Discussion, where you can attach an mp3 file. As you can see from the Comments on that Discussion, the guys are excited to have you join us!

Very nice to meet you as well. Are you using a vocal processor to get that killer reverb on your vocals.
  • RTZGUITARS

By the way Letha, that dead flowers cover you guys did was awesome! We do that song in my band as well, rock on!

  • Ron "Oily" Sprague

    Hey, Letha!

Sbtle or subdued I've rarely been accused of :-). The TVZ tribute album should be showing up here on CBN either tonight or tomorrow. Dan Sleep was downloading and checking it within the last hour, and I've also contacted the folks at MyTexasMusic.com so they can download it and carry it, too. I think y'all are gonna enjoy it.

  • Ron "Oily" Sprague

    Letha,

Is this the tailpiece you were referring to?:

Hi Letha, thanks for the nice words!  I use small nuts to keep the ball end from eating into the wood.  Simply thread the string through the nut and then onto the guitar.  Should work for your guitars as well.  No need to glue them on or anything.  Just makes it a bit more stable.  On the top end i use a string ferrule.  As far as price goes, I price mine just slightly higher, but as always let me know if I can help with anything.

  • Andy Eight Spades CBG

BTW, I do sell them and I don't really have a website but my facebook page.  Eight Spades Cigar Box Guitars.  I have two for sale at the moment and one 4 stringer close to completion. Thanks again.

  • Andy Eight Spades CBG

You too and good luck! ;)

  • Mark "Fatt Max" Hill

Thanks Letha, glad you liked the track

The only other instruments are an old snare drum, my one string Broomstick bass and a pair of hands, great fun to record. Feel free to check out my website at www.fattmax.co.nz

  • JP Swenson

Nice to meet you too.   Havin' fun and makin' friends!   What CBGs are all about!

  • Webweaver

Hi thanks for your comment about the guitar. It is a Michael Messer Blues resonator, all metal body. I am UK based and actually won this in a competition in Guitarist Mgazine. Winning this steered me back in the direction of the blues, which I have always loved and then towards Cigar Box Guitars and then this site, so it was like winning two prizes. I would trade it in a heartbeat for a voice like yours though (obviously a little deeper!)

I could listen to your voice all day long...

Your name is now on a train!

    A real pleasure

Letha, all three are great songs...  The chord structure of Loving Arms sounds like a venerable gospel tune, i.e., it's very simple, but lacks the "hooks" of the equally pretty Broken Bird. Of those two, I'd say Broken Bird is more memorable. Now, Cool Cool Water is altogether different, but I'm liking it a lot. I love the line, "want to drink from the water but you run away 'cause you just don't want to drown" -- great lyric! It has a timeless metaphorical quality unlike "no text 'how are you?'" (did I hear it right?) which seems dated to current technology. So, right now, I'm leaning towards Cool Cool Water...

BTW, I'm really glad you decided to go with CBG for these. I listened to your songs with the band (oh, yes, I googled ya!) and must say that the raw, crude quality of the CBG really complements your terrific vocals even more than regular "in-tune" instruments!

  • Uncle John

In a song writing contest,  I think playing the song alone - as well as you play- is a good idea.

Letha -- I just watched a number of your YouTube videos... Mmmmmm, good stuff! Had to watch "Nobody Else But You" a bunch of times and try to play, sing and dance along! Tremendous! Like so much of your music, it just has that "instant classic" feel. You've got some really talented Benders, too! Kudos to all!
