Thanks for your comments on my Autism Awareness guitar! It was fun to work on!
I like the gits you build. I hope you have good luck selling them!

Matt, Thanks for the comment.  It was super frustrating, trying to get that track laid down. I was back and forth between using a baritone 4string and a 3 string run through a Boss octave pedal.  Add the usual production grungees, that what I thought to be an easy track took me right to the dead line.  A great example of "maybe not done, but finished".

Nice review from a performer that I respect means a lot.  I'll get to give the whole CD a listen tomorrow.  I expect to enjoy yours.  Let you have detail critique :-) of yours later.

    Thanks again and blessings,

    Sam

Hi, Matt. Sorry I didn't reply to your question about my banjo earlier. I haven't been on in a while. Anyway, it sounds good. Not quite as "plunky" as a normal banjo, but it's got a nice twang to it. A later addition that's not in the pictures is a small strip of rubber shelf matting under the bridge. It deadens a little bit of the sustain, and pushes it a bit from guitar to banjo territory. Not a huge difference, and not really necessary, but it's what I did. The toothpick frets are holding up ok, mostly because I never play it. But all of my builds have toothpick frets, and none of them have any wear that's detrimental to playability. The eyebolts are so-so on this particular build, because they don't hold their tuning, but that's due to poor drill bit choice. On most of my other builds, they hold their tuning very well (most, because I used the same drill bit on another one, and have the same problem).

  • Jim Morris

Thanks Matthew. I never go into it with any expectations since I'm sort of new to banjo and a lot of folks there have been playing a long time. It's just great to socialize and jam with folks that I've listened to and learned from in the last few years.

Thanks Matt! I'd be interested in what artwork ideas you might have. I really like your idea of handing out a CD to go along with instrument purchases.

  • Jim Morris

Very cool painting Matt! I appreciate you spending time on this.

  • Jim Morris

Wow, this guy has some great ideas! I'm surprised I've not come across him till now. It looks like the first banjo is pretty much flat. I'm sure that would work but I think some depth, maybe 2 to 3 inches would give a better tone. I've made banjos in rectangular, octagonal, round, and other shapes that I don't know names for and I don't think the shape is real important to the tone. Some shapes are harder to hold in your lap but the size and depth do affect the tone. If you haven't tried streching a calfskin yet it's way easier than you might think. The plastic heads are cheap and fun but finding a suitable size piece of plastic is tough. 3 liter bottles are the largest I've been able to find. Good luck and thanks again for your work on my stuff. The fiddles tunes sound great
    Jim
  • Jim Morris

I used to get the econo calfskins from Elderly for about $10 but now I spring for the next grade up. They're around $20 but don't seem to be quite as affected by temp and humidity changes. Still, for a first try, the econo ones are pretty good so long as they stay indoors! But hey, soda bottles are free and way more in line with these kinds of builds.

  • Jim Morris

Yeah Matt, I used a hairdryer on high setting before I got a heat gun. It worked fine. I got a heat gun mainly because Harbor Freight had them on sale for less than $10 and I use it also for softening up glue when I'm taking something apart. One video showed a guy using a plumbing torch! I don't care for open flames in the shop so I didn't try that. The only problem I had with the cigar box is that I shrunk the plastic too tight and the sides began pulling inward.

  • Jim Morris

Oh yeah, I meant to tell you a friend of mine is an avid trapper and he has an animal skin drying for me to try. It'll be the first that I haven't purchased from a catalog. We'll see how that goes.

  • 3 String Blues

Awesome I am glad it showed! I know one day some how we will be able to meet ....It will great to show up at one of those PA cbg festivals one day!..and I know what it must be like for you right now my dad was in the Marine corp for 22 years and he use to get deployed for 6 and 9 months at a time when I was young, I know what was like....the best part was when he would come back and bring trinkets...once he brought me and my brother a spent tank shell...watching him walk thru the front door with that thing was a real eye opener... I had never seen such a thing before!  and the c rations ....we use to take them to school!....anyways glad you liked the cd , ....the covers really are so much better than buying anything or using those white sheeves I use to use...they are really easy to make, and fun too!

  • Uncle John

Glad you like it.   I mostly play key of G with those, open G, 1 finger Em and 2 fingered C and D.  They will play other keys.  That was a simple and fun build.  And now I am I the mood to do another.

  • Dave Lynas

Thanks Matthew. I’m not sure which fiddles you refer to. I sure like making these little 2 stringers.

  • Dave Lynas

Likewise Matthew. I love your 1 string fiddles and the music you coax out of them. Your haunting voice adds so much too.

  • Dave Lynas

Thanks for the nice comments about my ceramic endeavors. My life’s path has always been in the arts. My passion has always been in music. We share those paths. Great to walk with you Matthew.

  • Dave Lynas

Hi Matthew. I’d love to trade a two stringer with you Matthew. I’d love one of your fiddles. I’ll make one for you if you’ll make one for me. I love the look of yours and they sound so good in your hands. If you do want to do this, leave room on the headstock for a second string so I could add one in the future. ... Dave

  • Dave Lynas

Hi Matthew, I still don’t know which fiddles you refer too as your comment appears on my “comment wall” and is disconnected from the photo you’re looking at.

  • Dave Lynas

That’s great Matthew. It will take me a while too but i’m On it. Do you like the cigar box fiddles I make? I have some wonderful vintage boxes begging me to build with them.

  • Dave Lynas

Matthew. Hand tools rule! I use some power tools but they are old, worn out relics like myself. :^)

  • Dave Lynas

Now I know Matthew. What key do you like to play in? The length of the neck determines the key. G is a cello string long neck. D and E are short viola size backs.

  • Dave Lynas

I’ll size the neck for a D. You can mark it up if you wish. I don’t use a specific scale length but I can easily do a specific if you tell me the length you want. :^)
