To me, music must stir my soul...it needs to meet me at a basal level, have story to tell and tell it well; whether through it's words, melody, instruments, and/or history. Roots music and it's traditions is the music that most moves me (especially Blues). The simplicity and the power of these songs are beyond my ability to describe with words. But, hand made, simple, traditional instruments can preach this message with a single chord...they just resonate the spirit of the message. I also play Blues harmonica (through several homemade mics) as well as percussion (converted 5 gal bucket, saw blade cymbal, shakers, etc). The complexity if sound made through the simplicity of these pieces thrills me. I consider myself to be a musical tinkerer who has the great fortune to play and share these instruments. I am also a high school art/technology teacher and I regularly get to inspire my students by teaching them how to make their own instruments.
