This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

Hello from the heartland. I have a soft spot for homemade instruments of any kind. I built my first guitar out of a 2x4 and recently started picking up cigar boxes to make my first cbg. Waiting to find the right piece of wood for the neck. I've seen some cool pics here that have inspired me. You guys have some talent!
Hi all, I thought I had posted a hello on here but guess not. Anyway, I am Steve. I live in South East Louisiana right outside Baton Rouge toward New Orleans. I am a full time paramedic by trade for East Baton Rouge City/Parish EMS. My hobbies before being turned on to CBG are American Craft Beers/brewing and cooking, particularly ethnic foods.
I have always been into music and was a band geek in high school in the 70's. I have played the guitar (poorly) for years. I also play Bass (poorly) but did kick but on the trumpet.
Anyway, I just finished my first CBG and love it. Have already got the next build going and have quite a few ideas for others as I have like 30 boxes sitting here to use up. I look forward to learning the craft from the experienced folks here as well as making some new friends with similar interests.
Hello everybody,
I'm another "newbie" from England.
I've recently started trying to build CBGs, out of anything I could find lying around really, and this has inspired me to learn to play, my only problem is that i've never even touched a musical instrument since I was at school over 40 years ago! I'm not just rusty, I've seized up! My knowledge is absolute zero! I would really appreciate any tips, but please bear in mind, musically speaking, I'm about five years old! I've tried looking a DVDs, youtube etc, but I think thats a bit advanced for this poor beginner. If anyone would be kind enough to give me a few tips,on which strings to buy, how to pluck or strum 'em, and how to use a slide, then I would be eternally grateful. I don't aspire to be a great performer, it's just one of those things I've always wanted to do but never found the time until I retired.
Cigarboxnation is great. There's so much to explore.I don't think my retirement is going to be boring! I love listening to people play the instruments they've made. Thanks and perhaps one day ,hopefully, people can Listen to me play the one I've built!

Hi
Malcolm here from Australia. Hooked on 3 string CBG by John McNairs music CD's and a search for evil hillbilly music, the kind you can imagine creeping with the fog on a Louisiana night time. Kind of like in the Boags advertisements. I'm not a believer in 'constructed' music but love to let my hands work their way across my Nashville Tricone Resonator or my first CBG that I haven't named yet.
Peace to all
Hi everyone, I'm John Ogden and My wife bought me a CBG 3 stringer w/piezo about a year ago. I have been trying to play guitar all my life and I enjoy singing and playing. When I unwrapped the CBG I thought huh? then I plugged it in and used the copper slide that came with it then I said "cool".
I am in construction and am pretty handy with power tools and have quite a few. I am in the process of building 4 CBGs right now and this website was such a great help for me. I got side tracked when I started reading about stomp boxes so I made 2 right off the bat and they are so cool!! I am sticking to 3 string CBGs for now and I plan on taking pics of the progress.
I go by the user name OGGER on here, I live in NC. I bought parts from CBGitty and they are a great company! I bought so much they through in some picks and a capo! So I'll be shopping there more in the future but for now it's time to build!! Thanks for all your help. I think we are all on the same page here. Peace OGGER
Mornin', folks! I go by oilyfool (Ron Sprague), as I'm a petroleum geologist living and working in Saudi Arabia. Been lurking, reading and thinking for the last two months here. After singing and playing acoustic and electric for 35 years in pick-up blues-rock bands and church choirs, I decided I needed to kick start my playing by going "backwards." I'm handy with tools (I also help build sets for our local theater productions, when I'm not acting in or directing them!), and CBGs looked relatively easy - with a tangible result at the end of a build. I'm simultaneously building my first two, 3-stringers, for myself and my 11-year-old son - his 13-year old sister will probably want one, once she see ours, so there's build No 3 already planned! Plus, I have several local musically-inclined friends with significant birthdays coming up, so there's Builds 4 through at least 10...I'm introducing my builds as Alamo Guitars, having grown up in Texas, though I'm originally from southern Arkansas, and lived in Louisiana at various times. I have access to all kinds of exotic Asian woods, but they are still expensive, so my first builds are scrap lumber from our theater projects: 3/16" lauan skin plywood, 1/2" pine inner bracing timbers, lots of parts from C.B. Gitty (Thanks, Ben!), and any and everything I've been able to glean from my lurking and reading here. I also decided to build my own boxes, as shipping on CBs is outragesu, and I haven't yet gone to the local markets to see about sourcing the good Cuban boxes. Am seriously im-/ de-pressed with the levels of expertise I see here - gorgeous builds, that are beyond my woodworking capabilities from a shop tool standpoint, so my design philosophy is to do what I can with what I have or can relatively easily purchase locally (tools, and parts - wood must be scrap), and what I have time for, and most of all, make it look (and hopefully, sound) old and kewl. I will post build photos as and when, and welcome comments / suggestions / critiques).
Hey everyone! My names Dan Rankin, i'm from Nova Scotia Canada. I'm a 4th class Marine Engineer, which is why i go by Grease Stains online.
I heard about cigar box guitars back in Decemeber. I always wanted to build my own guitar, but i'm not much of good at wood working. Figured this is a great starting point; seeing as if it breaks or goes wrong, you've got spare parts for the next one!
I didn't have any cigar boxes laying around, but i had a couple old Quality Street and a chunk of birch so off i went! I've got 4 made now, with a 5th on the way. 2 are 3 strings, but i've taken a liking to the 4 strings. #3 is electric, #4 and 5 are going to be as well, and are going to friends. i've found a steady supply of cigar boxes, and slowly piecing a shortened scale six string to use as a travel guitar, with plans for a canjo and a uke in the works. (I'm a little hooked...hah)
Looking forward to learning from everyone and i hope i can bring anything i learn back here to help out!
Hey GBN!
My name is Ivan. I am from southern California. I barely heard about cigar box guitars 2 days ago, and yesterday I built my first one. And today I built my second. They both sound great. I think I found a new hobby.=) Oh, and i dont know how to play guitar. I figured this was a good way to learn. Please comment and friend.
Thanks guys!
My name is Lou. I am originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico but have been living in Birmingham AL for 15 years. I recently finished my first build. Though it was a 'simple' build, I learned alot from it and I'm getting started on my second build.
Feel free to friend me and check out my pics.
