Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia.  I'm a bit of a lurker, as I've been reading and reading for a while,…Continue

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

If it's fretless it can be all kinds of scales. Just move the slide wherever you want. One neck will do it all. :)>

Hi...I'm new here. Getting ready to build my first neck. I was wondering if it makes sense to make a fretless diatonic neck         (24 3/4) to play with a slide. I have no idea how to play a stringed instrument. I like the blues sound but would also like to take a stab at old gospel and REGGAE. Would a blues scale be better (and just stick to blues,) or some other fretless option fill the need better. Thanks for any direction. Great Site!

Welcome to the Nation Al. If you have built one you will definitely build more. Every time you see a box or biscuit tin (or hubcaps, or other stuff), you are going to be wondering what that build will sound like. Great fun in these things. Enjoy the journey.

Welcome Al, You have a good looking git there. I believe between playing it and building another,or even thinking about building will help you in your fight to get over the trauma you have endured. Good on ya, Mate.

I must have filled in the intro at the wrong place. Al's the name from Degilbo, Queensland, trying to get over major cancer surgery, had some drama attempting to build my first guitar, using 2" finishing nails for frets, the slide kept banging into the edge of the nails, so removed them and filled the slots. Sounds real good through a small amp. Have started on a hubcap guitar using two Holden caps, figured out a method of joining the caps together so one could be easily removed. This one will have genuine frets, hope it all works. I'm hooked, great therapy.

Just introduced myself, don't know where that will show up, here somewhere I guess, didn't know how to add a photo, but here is my recently finished first build using a smoked salmon box.

G'day from Oz, lurked here for some time and finally joined up!  Built quite a few now, running out of room at home!  Looking forward to getting some more technical info on construction techniques!  So many passionate builders here.....
