Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia. I'm a bit of a lurker, as I've been reading and reading for a while,…Continue

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

building my first CBG
Total newb to CBG's so be nice ;) I'll upload a pic of my first and only build (so far) shortly.
Welcome Dan, David Thomas(thank you for your service) and Dave. If you search the site you'll find a lot of info on how to do things and how to play. Good luck with your builds.
Hi everyone, new here and to cigar box guitars. I used to play guitar when i was younger but not picked up one in years so starting fresh. This week i made a Disney Diddley bow for my daughter, today i made a 2 string guitar from a sweet tin for my bro, sounded pretty cool, this weejend im gonna make a 3 string cigar box guitar, wish e luck lol, making it all up as i go along, once its built i will learn a few songs and workout the frets somehow.
Cheers
Hello my name is David Thomas I am new here I always wanted to play the guitar as a kid but never had the chance to own a guitar or take lessons. I am a disabled veteran who recently was forced to retire and decided to try to build and learn to play a 3 string guitar as a new hobby. since I can not get out as much as I use to. I am having problems finding many resources for learning to play. Most assume you know more than a beginner would know. I try to work with the tabbed songs but without a video showing me the correct steps and timing it is very difficult for a person with no musical background to know if they are making progress or not
new, received my kit from CB a couple days back, been reading forums. I do not know diddley or squat about guitars, but I have some wood experience. when it comes to light and strong aircraft excel in the use of wood, refer to it as natures composite. I would suggest the "EAA Aircraft Building Techniques" "Wood". I can't find a call number for the library, my copy is 1994 that I got from the EAA, explains moisture, bending, laminate and much more
Made 2 so far, 1x2 hardwood necks, 1/4x2 Tasmanian oak fretboards, no bending. Follow Dave Lynas advice re the grain, you should have no more problems.
I use 1x2's for my necks, but I use Red Oak cause it's cheap and easy to find at any hardware store. I also add a 3/8ths steel rod through the center for a trussrod and add a 1/4x2 fretboad. Makes a strong neck and haven't one of these warp/ramp on me yet. Even made one for a 6 string baritone 3 years ago with no problems yet.
Hi Wayne, Sounds like you're using 1x2 for a neck or some springy wood. The neck needs to be very stiff. The grain needs to be quarter sawn if possible with the grains standing vertical to the neck profile. I like beefy necks. Maple is about the strongest neck wood. Oak is good if the grain is right. Mahogany is often used and works great if made beefy. You may be able to laminate another length of wood to your neck to stiffen it up. Add another inch of neck wood under your first or add a stiff thick fingerboard over the original neck. Hope something helps here... Dave
