The answer is:  Anywhere you want!  I put mine 1/4" from each edge, which leaves the strings 1/2" apart...  Seems to be the common setup.

I space mine in about this much

It's about 3/16ths, then I split the difference between them for the other two.  A set of digital dial calipers is handy for this.  $10 at Harbour Freight.  I wear mine out.  Hope that helps.

On my 3 stringers I space around 7/16" between strings, or whatever looks cool :-)

On a 3 stringer,it's 1/2 '' either side of the middle string or whatever you're comfortable with....

Being a metric kinda guy, I use the centre line for the middle string, and space the others 5mm from each side of the fretboard. I also space the strings further apart (slightly) at the bridge so it is easier to play with fingers. I use a 14mm gap between the strings at the bridge.

I run the middle string down the center of the neck and then split the side measurement for the  remaining two strings.

On my three stringers I space them at 1/2" or slightly wider depending on the thread spacing of the rod I use for the nut and bridge.
