The simplest little resonator instrument of all. Please add links to plans, photos of your canjos and ideas you've found that make the most of this diminutive instrument. (The image is a temporary placeholder, I'll replace it any day now!)

Maybe it is just me, but I love to sit there and pick out songs I know or songs people want to play on my Canjo. I own a couple of Canjo Song books from Gitty, and looked around online and found a…Continue

If you've used an upright can on a chordophone, here's the place to show your work.I'm looking for an olive oil can right now, one of those really pretty ones from Eastern Europe.Continue

Suggested that my wife start opening cans from the bottom. Got REALLY big eye roll...
Could do but most are the ring pull type, not sure how strong they would be.
can you not open can other end??
I either remove and re-stick the labels (sad), and have also printed my own which works well.
If you're bothered that the can's label is upside down, I believe Ben (CB Gitty) will sell you some generic American Canjo labels that you can put on right-side up. They're also useful if your church's gospel group frowns on your use of beer cans.
Thanks guys. I feel better now.

I am far form an expert but I have been building with the open end down (away form the nut) to get more strumming room as you pointed out. I have used 22/22.5 inch scale length.
Silly as it sounds, I think this is a major design issue.
The sounding length ("scale") of the string cannot exceed 25 inches or else the player can't reach the intervals between frets. (I'm seriously considering a 22" scale to make fingering easier.) The "picking hollow" should be positioned to encourage picking at about 1/6 of the way up the string in order to get optimum tone from the instrument.
Even a medium sized can will cover the ideal picking point if the open top is positioned towards the nut. Also the height of the can will reduce the number of frets that can be used on the fingerboard.
I like to have at least 12 frets available--not counting the chromatic 6 1/2th fret between 6 and 7. That way I can pick "Wildwood Flower" in at least 2 keys.
You really can't have that many frets if the can is "turned up."
What are the thoughts on having the open end of the can towards the nut or foot. My thought is that the open end down gives me more strumming room. Any comments on why or why not?
Watched it today very good, when is part 2 due?
