Better a spider in a fosters canjo, than a redback on the toilet seat! Just asayin.... :-)

I noticed this morning while having coffee on my farmers porch that my Fosters Canjo had a spider in it. This canjo has been sitting near the wall between my chair and the bottle opener all summer where I sit and have a cold one after work. I play it there every time me and the dog sit there. I never met the spider but he's gone now. Next year I'll check for a new one and name him Spider Boy John.

Those are GREAT creations, Ted !  Thanks for the inspiration!!!

I'll build more next week modeled after yours.

Got some more strings today, and still trying to get ideas for a simple tuner.

So far a uke tuner seems like the easiest way to go, but I suspect they will not handle a lot of tension well, so I'm using them with the nylon strings.

Best

These stick-in-can single string diddley bow canjos are as simple as I can figger to build 'em!

They are fretless, and four of them use nylon strings, with different size cans.

I like the larger sauce can best, and the 24oz beercan least.

The nylon strings work fine, and allow me to use the uke tuners, which are the cheapest method I can find for tightening a string...  less than an eyebolt, nuts and washers, at the local hardware store!

All are made from scrap softwood, and only one of the lot will need minor shaving of the neck/soundboard.  They all play without a nut, but require one for using a slide.

Taping a piezo onto the soundboard works dandy!

Whoops! My comment yesterday was intended for the "Cans for the Canjo" discussion group. Sorry, about that!

I don't build canjos much anymore (I prefer 3-stringers), but when I did, I found cutting the tops of coke cans and the like was particularly frustrating (as I tend to be a crude builder and my rough techniques would often either dent the can or I'd end up with yet another cut), So, I switched to using those cans which have an aluminum "pop top" which make it easy to peel off the top of the can when you open them. They work pretty well, and tend not to leave jagged edges for people to cut themselves with. But, yeah, if you can burnish off the sharp edge, that would be even better. Just my 2 cents worth...

Me and my neighbor made this one sunday and she finished it and showed me today. She called it Kokopelli. She printed the design on cloth and glued it on the coffee can. The neck is from a 1 1/2" square mohogany baluster. All the other stuff is from a free guitar from the landfill swap shop.
